Game Recap: Men's Soccer |

Men's soccer battles to 1-1 tie with Cardinals in non-conference action Monday

The Medgar Evers College men's soccer team played its fifth consecutive road contest to start the 2025 campaign on Monday afternoon, battling the York College Cardinals in a non-conference match in Jamaica, Queens. After each squad traded goals in the opening session, the defenses were stellar, eventually leading to the teams playing to a 1-1 draw.

York College needed just 79 seconds to snatch an early 1-0 advantage, with Jamar Johnson slashing home Ernest Bawilliam's beautiful cross pass. The Cardinals nearly registered another goal shortly thereafter, but Derick Aboagye-Frimpong's long shot rattled off the crossbar to keep the host's lead at a goal.

Medgar Evers would eventually record the equalizer in the 17th minute. Veteran Taye Simon took advantage of a Cardinals turnover, stealing the ball and zipping a shot into the net to square the match at a goal apiece. That goal would cap the scoring for the session, as the teams headed into halftime with the score tied, 1-1.

Scoring opportunities were at a premium in the final 45 minutes of action, but both teams had instances where they were almost able to snatch the lead. In the 68th minute (67:25), York's Aboagye Frimpong's free kick blast was stopped by Cougars netminder Clirian Nunez. Later, with the match winding down, Bernardo Guerrier's 85th-minute shot sailed past the far post, keeping the match tied. Both teams played airtight defense for the remainder of the clash, resulting in the 1-1 draw.

York College held an 18-12 edge in shots, while also recording six shots on goal compared the Medgar Evers' four. Clirian Nunez made five saves for the Cougars, while the Cardinals' George Molina finalized his afternoon with three stops.

Medgar Evers is now unbeaten in consecutive matches, and the team will now return to action on Saturday afternoon, as the Cougars will travel to Robert L. McNulty Memorial Soccer Field to battle the Gothic Knights of NJCU. Start-time for the non-conference affair is scheduled for 1:00pm.
