Game Recap: Men's Soccer |

Cougars undone by Gothic Knights' offensive barrage as NJCU cruises to non-conference win

The Medgar Evers College men's soccer team dropped a non-conference match on Saturday afternoon, falling to the Gothic Knights of New Jersey City University by a score of 9-0. The contest took place at the Robert L. McNulty Memorial Soccer Field in Jersey City, NJ. With the defeat, the Cougars fell to 1-4-1 on the 2025 campaign, while NJCU improved to 3-4-2.

NJCU came out and dominated the game from the opening kick as they put pressure on Medgar Evers' net minder, Clirian Nunez, immediately with three shots in the opening 20 minutes. The Gothic Knights broke through for the contest's first goal in the 22nd minute, as Gerard Bocanegra alertly headed home a shot off the crossbar to put his team up 1-0. Eight minutes later, Dom Celi Jr. deposited Kevin Alves' pass into the net to double the hosts' advantage to 2-0.

The Gothic Knights continued their offensive barrage in the 38th minute when Celi Jr. scored his second goal of the match, taking advantage of a nifty cross pass by Brian Ferreira before burying the ball home. Celi Jr. struck again in the 43rd minute, once again taking advantage of a crisp feed from Ferreira and slicing the ball into the net to make it 4-0 NJCU. That would be the score as the teams broke for halftime.

Tristan Bastos scored the first goal of the second stanza, redirecting a corner kick from Alves to boost the host's edge to 5-0. It wouldn't take the Gothic Knights long to score their 6th and 7th markers by Kenneth Valladares and Maximillian Bzuikiewicz in the 59th and 63rd, respectively. NJCU capped its scoring when

Yehia Abdelmeged scored goals 82 ticks apart (66th and 68th minutes), making it 9-0 NJCU. Abdelmeged's goals were assisted by Ferreira and Dilan Ojeda.
NJCU out-shot the Cougars by a count of 26-2. Both of the Cougars' shots were on-goal, attempted by Angelo Valerio and Kwasi Andoh.

Camilo Pascual Verdu earned the victory in between the pipes for the Gothic Knights, as he logged 45 shutout minutes and made one stop. His backup, Dominic Cunha, played the second half and didn't allow a goal while making a save. Clirian Nunez took the loss in goal for the Cougars.

Medgar Evers will look to bounce back next Monday evening, September 29, as the Cougars will travel to Newburgh, NY to clash with Mount Saint Mary College in non-conference action. Start-time is scheduled for 6:00pm.
