Knights' prolific offense too much for Cougars as men's soccer falls at Kaplan Field in Newburgh

The Medgar Evers College men's soccer team dropped a non-conference match on Monday evening, falling to the Knights of Mount Saint Mary's College (NY) by a score of 5-1. The clash took place at Kaplan Field in Newburgh, NY. With the defeat, the Cougars dipped to a mark of 1-5-1 on the 2025 campaign, while the hosts improved to 5-3-3.

Mount Saint Mary's (NY) needed just 1:55 to light up the scoreboard, as TJ Mark tapped a ball home right in front of the net, following beautiful passes from Liam Hughes and Jeremy Burgos. The Knights continued to be aggressive offensively, peppering shots at Cougars netminder Clirian Nunez, before breaking through again courtesy of Marco Mazzarelli (7:06, from Quinn Tynan). That put Mount Saint Mary's (NY) up 2-0. The Knights capped their first half scoring with 14 seconds remaining in the session, when Ethan Wallace slashed a ball home (44:46, from Ethan Wallace) to give the hosts a commanding 3-0 edge.

Medgar Evers got itself back into the non-conference clash just 38 seconds into the second half (45:38) when newcomer Mariko Diarisso scored on a breakaway to slice the Cougars' deficit to a pair of goals, 3-1.

Later, in the 55th minute, Wallace found Mazzarelli on a through ball, which Mazzarelli blasted home to once again make it a three-goal contest (4-1). After a lull in scoring, the Knights put an exclamation point on its victory in the 81st minute. Cam Welsh drew a foul in the penalty area, allowing Jeremy Burgos to score on a penalty kick to make it 5-1 in favor of the hosts.

Mount Saint Mary's (NY) held a commanding 33-2 edge in shots, and earned 11 corner kick opportunities, while the Cougars had no corners. Knights goaltender Noah Horn got the victory in net, allowing just the one goal. Nunez took the loss for Medgar Evers, allowing the five goals, though also making 15 stops on the night.

The Cougars will look to bounce back on Wednesday evening, as Medgar Evers will travel to Randall's Island (Field No. 10) to battle the Beavers of CCNY in a CUNYAC match. Start-time is scheduled for 6:00pm.
