Game Recap: Women's Volleyball |

Cougars, unable to establish offensive rhythm, fall to Mount Saint Vincent in straight sets

The Medgar Evers College women's volleyball team is still search for its first victory on the 2025 campaign, as the Cougars last night were defeated by the Dolphins of Mount Saint Vincent University by scores of 7-25, 9-25, and 15-25. The non-conference clash took place at the Peter Jay Sharp Center in Riverdale, NY. With the defeat, Medgar dipped to a mark of 0-5 on the season, while the hosts improved to 4-5.

Despite the loss for the Cougars, Jennifer Metra, Sariyah Brumaire, and Shanya Aitcheson each tallied a kill apiece. Metra also added a team-high two service aces, while Maritza Argueta finalized her evening with a match-high six digs.

For the University of Mount Saint Vincent, 12 different dolphins notched at least one kill on the evening. Stephanie Rodriguez registered a match-highs of 20 assists and seven service aces, while also tying for the match-high of three kills. Alexandra Lyn-Caballero, Sophia Mandalakis, Sienna Martin, and Paige Staley all contributed three points apiece for the hosts, as well. Olivia Rodriguez added three digs, two service aces, and two kills, and Gabrielle Mills finalized her evening with four aces.

After the Dolphins dominated the opening two sets, the Cougars fought hard to stay within striking distance in the third set. Trailing 17-9, Medgar Evers rattled off three consecutive points, courtesy of an attack error by Madalakis, and consecutive service aces by Metra. That brought Medgar Evers to within five, 17-12. Later in the set, the Dolphins essentially put things away with a string of four straight points (kills by Torres and Caballero, an attack error by Metra, and a service ace by Torres) to snatch a 24-14 edge. Two serves later, the hosts captured the match with a kill by Caballero.

The Dolphins hit .218 for the night (26-14-55), while the Cougars hit in the negative. Mount Saint Vincent University piled 34 digs to Medgar Evers' three, and the hosts held a modest 19-13 advantage in digs.

Medgar Evers will look to bounce back Saturday afternoon, as the team travels to Phoenixville, PA to battle Valley Forge University in a non-conference affair. Start-time is scheduled for 2:00pm.
