Game Recap: Women's Volleyball |

Cougars put forth valiant effort, but ultimately drop non-conference clash to Patriots in straight sets

The Medgar Evers College women's volleyball team suffered a non-conference defeat on Saturday afternoon, falling to the Patriots of Valley Forge University by scores of 12-25, 14-25, and 17-25. With the defeat, the Cougars fell to 0-6 on the 2025 campaign, while the Patriots improved to 5-2.

Despite the loss for the Cougars, veterans Aliyah Chapman and Jennifer Metra tied for the team-high of four kills. Chapman's 11 digs were also a team-best. Sariyah Brumaire finalized her afternoon with three kills, seven digs, and a team-high four assists, and Maritza Argueta and Sarah Vallon finished with seven and six digs, respectively.

For the Patriots, Unique Castilho's six kills led all players. She also added five digs and registered three service aces. Mattayah Lyndaker finalized her afternoon with four kills, four digs, and three assists, and Abigail Sumego posted match-highs of nine assists and eight service aces, while finishing with three digs. Finally, it was Hadassah Rivera contributing a match-high 17 digs.

The turning point of the opening set came when Valley Forge University held an 11-7 advantage, and proceeded to rattle off seven consecutive points to essentially put the match out of reach. That aforementioned run featured a kill apiece by Areigna Dales and Lyndaker, and a service ace by Rivera. Later on in the set, with the hosts holding a comfortable 23-11 edge, consecutive attack errors by Brumaire clinched the set for Valley Forge.

With the second set tied at two apiece, Medgar Evers scored four consecutive points thanks to four Patriots errors, including three attack errors by Mattayah, to take a 6-2 advantage. The Cougars led 11-10 later in the set, but Valley Forge put together another ferocious run, scoring 13 of the next 14 points to catapult ahead 23-12. Three different Valley Forge players notched a kill during that run, and Sumego recorded five service aces during that spurt, as well. The set was eventually clinched when Lyndaker slammed home a kill, as the Patriots won it, 25-14.

The third set featured a ton of big runs by both squads. Valley Forge scored the first six points, highlighted by Unique Castilho's service ace, and a kill by Dales. Valley Forge used a 5-0 run later in the set to take a double-digit advantage, 13-3, but the Cougars responded with a 10-4 spurt (highlighted by two kills by Metra, and a kill apiece from Chapman and Brumaire) to inch to within four, 17-13.

The pendulum swung back and forth to end the set, and essentially, the match, as Valley Forge scored the next six points, followed by Medgar Evers registering four straight, and the Patriots notching the final two.

Both teams struggled with their hitting throughout the afternoon, as Valley Forge earned a .000 percentage, and the Cougars hit in the negative. The Patriots held a 20-2 edge in service aces, and a slight 38-34 advantage in digs.

The Cougars will return to action on Tuesday evening, as Medgar Evers will play host to York College in a CUNYAC contest. Start-time is scheduled for 6:00pm.
