Game Recap: Women's Volleyball |

Women's Volleyball silenced by Lehman College in non-conference contest Monday evening

The Medgar Evers College women's volleyball team is still searching for its first victory of the 2025 campaign, as the Cougars last night suffered a non-conference loss to Lehman College by scores of 2-25, 14-25, and 10-25. The match took place at the APEX Center in the Bronx. With the defeat, the Cougars dipped to a record of 0-8 on the season, while the Lightning improved to 2-9.

Despite the loss for Medgar Evers, veteran Jennifer Metra finalized her evening with a team-high two kills to go along with three digs and a service ace. Maritza Argueta's six digs were a match-high, and Shanya Aitcheson posted a team-best two service aces.

Alanis Vasquez led the way for Lehman with 15 service aces, while also contributing three kills and five digs. Edith Oblitas registered 12 aces while piling nine assists. Chyenne Gray-Taitt recorded four kills, and Ayah Hamdaoui finalized her evening eight assists with three kills.

Lehman dominated the opening set 25-2, powered by 17 service aces. 14 of those aforementioned aces came courtesy of Vasquez in an extremely impressive showing.

The Cougars trailed 8-1 in the second set before battling back to keep it close. Medgar Evers scored three straight points via attack errors by Gray-Taitt to inch to within four (8-4). After a Lehman kill by Ayah Hamdaoui gave the Lightning a 9-4 edge, the Cougars scored four straight points (thanks to a pair of aces by Aitcheson, and two errors by Lehman) to close to within one, 9-8.

Perhaps the turning point of the set came later, when, with the Lightning up 15-11, Lehman rattled off five straight points to put things out of reach. Kills by Hamdaoui, Gray-Taitt, and Vismairely Hernandez, and a pair of service aces by Pinales, made it 20-11 in favor of the hosts. The Lightning would outscore the Cougars 5-3 the rest of the way to win the set, 25-14.

The Lightning used 11 consecutive service aces by Oblitas to build a comfortable 11-0 advantage in the third set. Medgar Evers never drew any closer than 10 points down in the third, though Metra did register a kill and a service ace along the way.

Lehman held a 39-3 edge in service aces throughout the evening, while also hitting .271 for the night (23-10-48). The Lightning held a modest 19-14 advantage in digs.

Medgar Evers will return to action on Saturday afternoon, as the Cougars will travel to the Cosgrove Athletic Center in New Haven, CT to participate in a tri-match. The Cougars will battle SUNY Maritime at 1:00pm in a neutral contest, before taking on the hosts, Albertus Magnus, at 3:00pm.
