Women's Volleyball opens 2025 with loss to Yeshiva University in straight sets

The Medgar Evers College women's volleyball team suffered a defeat in its 2025 season opener on Wednesday evening, falling to the Maccabees of Yeshiva University in straight sets, by scores of 8-25, 12-25, and 16-25.

Despite the loss for the Cougars, Aliyah Chapman, Sariyah Brumaire, and Jennifer Metra notched a kill apiece. Chapman's two service aces led all Medgar Evers players, and Brumaire's six digs were a team-best.

Elle Ohayon led the way for the victorious Maccabees, as she registered a match-high 10 digs, piled seven service aces, and tied for the match-high of three kills. Shany Elmaleh's nine service aces led all players, and her three digs tied for the match-high. Candace Villavicencio contributed three kills and a pair of digs. Naava Bodek finished with eight assists – a match best.

Yeshiva led 6-4 in the opening set before rattling off 11 of the next 12 points to snatch a commanding 17-5 edge in the match. That aforementioned run was highlighted by a kill apiece from Estee Brintauch and Villavicencio. Later in the set, leading 22-8, Yeshiva captured the last three points and the set courtesy of a kill by Ohayon, an attack error by Chapman, and an ace by Ohayon.

In the second set, the Cougars rallied from a 7-3 deficit to tie the score at seven-all, thanks to an attack error by Shany Elmaleh, a ball-handling error by Naava Bodeck, and two more attack errors by Elmaleh. After Yeshiva rattled off three consecutive points to go back up 10-7, Medgar Evers once again scratched back, tying the match at 10-all. Sarah Vallon recorded a service ace during that aforementioned spurt.

Later, with the score knotted at 12 apiece, the Maccabees would score 13 consecutive points to capture the set, 25-12. Villavicencio, Sasha Aaron, and Elmaleh each contributed a kill during that ferocious Yeshiva run, and Ohayon put the finishing touches on the set with three straight service aces.

Leading 4-3 early in set number three, the Cougars scored four straight points (courtesy of a ball-handling error by Emma Lieber, an attack error by Ohayon, and consecutive service aces by Chapman) to take an 8-3 advantage. However, behind strong serving from Elmaleh and Progress Gasa, Yeshiva University quickly reestablished itself, taking a 13-9 lead. YU would only continue to surge, taking advantage of errors from the Cougars along with kills from Gasa and Leya Dennen to lock up a 25-16 victory.

Yeshiva University swatted .149 on the evening (17-10-47), while Medgar Evers hit in the negative. The Maccabees held a 22-4 edge in service aces, while also registering 26 digs to the Cougars' 18.

Medgar Evers will return to action on Friday evening, as the team will play its home opener against the University of Valley Forge. Start-time for the contest is scheduled for 6:00pm.
