The Medgar Evers College women's volleyball team suffered a loss in its 2025 home opener on Friday evening, falling to the Patriots of Valley Forge University in straight sets, by scores of 10-25, 14-25, and 13-25.

Despite the loss for the Cougars, newcomer Briana Drummond registered team-highs of nine digs and three kills. Veteran Jennifer Metra finalized her evening with five digs, a pair of assists, and a kill, and Aliyah Chapman contributed a kill, a pair of assists, and two digs.

In the victory for the Patriots, Mattayah Lyndaker and Clarissa Lockman tied for the match-high of five kills. Lyndaker's nine service aces and five digs led all players, while Lockman also added five service aces of her own. Abigail Sumego's 16 assists were a match-high, and she also registered five service aces. Unique Castilho hit .375 (4-1-8) on the evening with three digs.

The Cougars led 2-0 in the early stages of the first set, before Valley Forge University scored 12 of the next 15 points to snatch a 12-5 edge. Medgar Evers then notched three straight points to inch within four in a spurt that was highlighted by Maritza Argueta's service ace, but a 9-2 run by the visitors put the Patriots ahead 21-10.

Medgar Evers tried to battle back late, scoring two straight points courtesy of consecutive errors by Sumego to pull to within nine (21-12), but Valley Forge capped the set by outscoring the hosts 3-1, winning it on a bad set by Chapman.

In the second set, trailing 17-9, the Cougars rattled off three straight points (courtesy of a Castilho service error and an attack error apiece by Lyndaker and Lockman) to inch to within five (17-12). Valley Forge responded with a kill and service ace by Lockman, sandwiched around a bad set by Medgar's Shanya Aitcheson, to take a 20-12 edge. Later, with the visitors leading 21-14, the Patriots collected the final four points of the set, highlighted by Sumego's kill and Lyndaker's service ace.

With Valley Forge University holding a slim 9-7 advantage, the visitors scored 11 consecutive points, with Lyndaker piling six service aces during that aforementioned spurt. Up 20-7, the Patriots notched five of the next eight points to capture the set and the match.

The Patriots hit .075 on the evening (18-14-53), while the Cougars hit in the negative. Valley Forge held a 27-1 edge in service aces, while also piling 17 assists to Medgar Evers' four.

The Cougars will return to action on Tuesday evening, as the team will travel to Jamaica, NY to take on the Cardinals of York College in a non-conference match. Start-time for the contest is scheduled for 7:00pm.
