Cougars unable to keep pace with relentless Hawks as Hunter registers convincing CUNYAC victory Wednesday evening

The Medgar Evers College women's basketball team dropped a CUNYAC game last night, falling to the Hawks of Hunter College by a score of 93-50. The contest took place at the Cougars Cave in Brooklyn, NY. With the defeat, Medgar Evers dipped to a mark of 2-15 on the 2025-2026 campaign (1-6 CUNYAC), while the Hawks improved to 13-5 (6-1 CUNYAC).

Despite the loss for the Cougars, Medgar Evers was paced by newcomer Moutiatou Djibring, as she posted a double-double with a team-high 14 points and a game-best 20 rebounds (including 12 on the offensive glass). She also swatted a pair of shots, and registered an assists. Alexis Davis netted 10 points while snatching six rebounds, and Hailey Broderick finalized her evening with nine points, two boards, and a pair of steals.

In the victory for the Hawks, Alexa Charles put forth a sensational performance, connecting on 15 of her 23 attempts from the floor to finish with a game-high 34 points. He seven steals also led all players, and she collected six rebounds and tallied a pair of assists. Kennedy DeRuy knocked down five of her six shot attempts, finishing with 12 points, four assists, three rebounds, and a pair of steals, and Wanhua Peng netted 12 points while collecting six boards and leading all players with four blocked shots. Mia Fuller also scored in double figured for the Hawks, finishing with 11 points, a game-high five assists, two steals, and two rebounds.

Medgar Evers stayed close early, as Aaliyah Lyons' jumper with 5:46 remaining in the first quarter pulled the hosts to within a point, 8-7. It was all Hawks from there, though. Hunter finished the period on a 23-4 run, sparked by Charles' 13 points, and Fuller's six. After a period, Hunter held a healthy 31-11 advantage.

The visitors dominated the second quarter of action, outscoring the Cougars 23-8 in the session, and allowing just four Medgar Evers field goals. Charles scored over half of Hunter's points in the period (12 of 23), boosting her total to 26 for the half, and giving the Hawks a comfortable 54-19 as time expired on the period.

Hunter continued its dominance in the third quarter, going up by as many as 53 points (78-25) on a Makkedah Murray triple with 2:32 left in the period. The Hawks outscored the Cougars 28-12 in the third to take an 82-31 edge after 30 minutes of action.

Medgar Evers did begin the fourth quarter with an 8-2 run, fueled by four points from Djibring, and a bucket apiece from Davis and Bryanna Merger to pull to within 45 (84-39). The Cougars would only pull as close as 41 points down, before going on to lose the contest 93-50.

The Hawks were way more efficient shooting the basketball on the evening, connecting on 36 of 78 shot attempts (46.2 percent), while also sinking 15 of 21 shots from the stripe (71.4 percent). On the flip side, Medgar Evers earned just a 24.7 percent conversion rate (22-89), and hit only four out of 13 shots from the line (30.8 percent).
Medgar Evers lost the game despite dominating on the glass, as the Cougars held a 65-50 edge on the boards.

The Hawks, though, held edges in assists (24-12), steals (16-6), and blocked shots (11-5). Hunter also won the turnover battle, committing just 15 miscues, while Medgar Evers had 27.

The Cougars will return to action on Friday evening, as Medgar Evers will host the Baruch College Bearcats in another CUNYAC contest. Start-time is scheduled for 5:00pm.
