Game Recap: Women's Basketball |

Cougars race out to 23-point lead (40-17), but Bearcats dominate final 23 minutes of play to secure CUNYAC win

The Medgar Evers College women's basketball team dropped a CUNYAC game last night, falling to the Bearcats of Baruch College by a score of 77-64. The contest took place at the Cougars Cave in Brooklyn, NY. With the defeat, Medgar Evers dipped to a mark of 2-16 on the 2025-2026 campaign (1-7 CUNYAC), while the Bearcats improved to 9-10 (5-3 CUNYAC).

Despite the loss for the Cougars, Alexis Davis finalized her evening with a game-high 29 points to go along with nine rebounds, three steals, and two assists. Aaliyah Lyons flirted with nearly registering a triple-double, as she scored 13 points, led all players with nine assists, and snatched eight boards. Newcomer Moutiatou Djibring posted a double-double with 12 points and 11 rebounds, and Jennifer Metra added 10 points, eight rebounds, four dimes, and two steals.

Isabella Kostyal-Larrier paced her squad in Baruch's victory, scoring a game-high 23 points while tying for the team-high of six assists, adding three steals, and snatching two rebounds. Lola Idir contributed 18 points, six rebounds, four assists, and two steals, and Lola De Luka contributed 14 points, four boards, four assists, and two steals. Finally, it was Lillianna Morales posting a double-double with 11 points, a team-high 11 rebounds, four assists, and two blocked shots.

Medgar Evers used the opening 5:17 to build an 18-2 advantage, fueled by nine points from Davis, six from Djibring, and a triple by Metra. Later in the quarter, the hosts led 20-5, before going on an 8-0 spurt (thanks to four points from Davis and a bucket apiece by Metra and Lyons) to take a 28-5 advantage. The Cougars held a 28-7 edge after 10 minutes of action.

In the second quarter, a jumper by Davis gave the Cougars a 40-17 edge. Shortly later, Medgar Evers led 42-20, and that is where the game would turn around. Baruch College outscored the hosts 12-0 over the final 2:34 of the half (Kostyal-Larrier started and finished the run with buckets), slicing Medgar's advantage to 10, 42-32, as time expired on the opening session.

Baruch spent most of the third quarter chipping away at its deficit, eventually tying the game at 50-all on a converted Morales free throw with 1:49 left in the third quarter. Kostyal-Larrier connected on two free throws 23 seconds later to put the Bearcats up 52-50. The visitors led 55-50 after 30 minutes of play.

The final period saw the Bearcats leda by as many as nine points twice, but a jumper by Lyons, and a three-point conversion by Bryanna Merger, inched the Cougars to within four (64-60) with 4:58 left. Baruch would finish strong, though, outscoring the hosts 13-4 down the stretch to put the game away.

The Bearcats made the most of their opportunities shooting the basketball, earning an overall conversion rate of 41.8 percent (28-67). Medgar Evers connected on 29 of 78 shot attempts (37.2 percent) on the night.

Medgar Evers lost the game despite out-rebounding Baruch by a count of 50-42. The Bearcats, though, held advantages in assists (27-19), steals (15-12), and blocked shots (3-1). The visitors also won the turnover battle, committing 20 miscues, while the Cougars finished with 24.

The Cougars will return to action on Saturday, January 31, as Medgar Evers will travel to the APEX Center in the Bronx to battle the Lightning of Lehman College in another CUNYAC game. Start-time for the contest is scheduled for 12:00pm.
