Game Recap: Women's Basketball |

Cougars hang tough in first half before Lightning take over; Djibring scores 21 points, grabs 20 rebounds in defeat

The Medgar Evers College women's basketball team suffered a CUNYAC defeat on Saturday afternoon, falling to the Lightning of Lehman College by a score of 73-54. The game took place at the APEX Center in the Bronx. With the defeat, the Cougars dipped to a mark of 2-17 (1-8 CUNYAC) on the 2025-2026 campaign, while the Lightning improved to 11-10 (6-3 CUNYAC).

Despite the loss for the Cougars, newcomer Moutiatou Djibring dominated by registering a massive double-double, posting a team-high 21 points, and a game-best 20 rebounds. Alexis Davis added 17 points, four rebounds, and a pair of assists, and senior Jennifer Metra finalized her afternoon with seven points, 11 rebounds, three dimes, and a pair of steals.

In the victory for the Lightning, Sage Fanelli was the jack-of-all-trades for her squad, as she scored a game-high 22 points, tied for the team-high with nine rebounds, and led all players on the afternoon with eight assists and eight steals. Isabela Araujo contributed 14 points, five rebounds, four steals, and two assists, and Nelson Asamoah finalized her afternoon with 12 points, six assists, and five rebounds.

Things looked promising for the Cougars early, as Medgar Evers raced out to an early 10-4 advantage in the opening 4:01 of play. Djibring's six points during that aforementioned spurt were sandwiched around buckets by Aaliyah Lyons and Jennifer Metra. The Lightning answered that early surge by the visitors with a 10-0 run over a span of 1:13 to catapult ahead by a score of 14-10. Sage Fanelli was a huge contributor during that push for Lehman, starting and closing the run with drained triples.

After a three-point basket by Lyons inched the Cougars within one, the Lightning answered with seven consecutive points to push its edge to eight, 21-13. A converted jumper by Medgar Evers' Davis with 35 ticks left in the period would cap the scoring for the first quarter, with Lehman holding a modest 21-15 advantage.

Medgar Evers trailed 27-22 with 3:30 remaining in the half, before closing out the session with a 9-4 run to knot the game at 31 apiece. Djibring scored four points during that run, with Metra contributing three. Davis buried a layup right before the horn to get the Cougars even.

Lehman College took control of the game in the second half, dominating defensively throughout the final 20 minutes of play. Medgar Evers actually scored the first five points of the third, courtesy of Djibring, as Medgar Evers held a 36-33 advantage, but Lehman dominated for the remainder of the afternoon. Over the final 8:07 of the third quarter, the Lightning outscored the Cougars 15-4 to take a 48-40 lead after 30 minutes of play. Musharafa Muniru was the primary offensive contributor for the Lightning during that ferocious run, as she netted five points.

The Cougars never trailed by any fewer than eight points in the final period. Lehman College outscored the visitors 25-14 in the fourth, leading by as many as 20 (68-48) before winning the CUNYAC clash by 19.

The Lighting were far more efficient shooting the basketball from the floor, with Lehman earning a conversion rate of 44.6 percent (29-65), and Medgar Evers draining 24 of 75 shots (32 percent). The Cougars dominated on the glass, snatching 56 rebounds on the day to the host's 39, but the Lightning held advantages in assists (17-13) and steals (16-5). Medgar Evers swatted two shots, while Lehman did not record a block, and the hosts won the turnover battle, committing 16 miscues on the day, while the Cougars finished with 28.

Medgar Evers will return to the court on Tuesday evening, as the Cougars will travel to the West Quad Gymnasium in Brooklyn, NY to battle the Bulldogs. Start-time for that contest is scheduled for 5:00pm.
