Cougars struggle in Johns Hopkins University Classic, falling to Profs and Pioneers on consecutive days

The Medgar Evers College women's basketball team started calendar year 2026 by competing in the Johns Hopkins University Women's Basketball Classic in Baltimore, Maryland this weekend. The Cougars, who had won two of their previous three contests before the break, dropped both games of the classic, falling to Rowan University by a score of 86-37 on Saturday, before falling to the Pioneers of William Paterson on Sunday, 93-33.

With that aforementioned output, Medgar Evers is now 2-10 on the 2025-2026 campaign. Rowan University improved to 7-4 on the year, and William Paterson bumped to 11-1.

January 3, 2026: Profs 86, Cougars 37

In the Cougars' loss to the Profs, veteran Aaliyah Lyons led the way for her squad, as she tied for the game-high 12 points while also swiping a game-high six steals. She also finalized her afternoon with five rebounds. Newcomer Moutiatou Djibring posted a double-double with 10 points and a game-high 10 boards, and Jennifer Metra and Alexis Davis scored nine and six points, respectively.

Three players tied for the game-high of 12 points for Rowan University, including Megan Donelson, Jes Mastriano, and Haley Selmer. Selmer narrowly missed registering a double-double, as she pulled down a team-best nine rebounds. Emily Poulas contributed nine points, and Lily Bross added seven points, a game-high six assists, and a team-best five steals. Finally, it was Ava Kraybill netting six points in the win.

The Cougars took an early 5-4 lead 3:31 into the opening quarter thanks to Davis' long triple. Rowan responded with a 7-0 run over a span of 3:07 to take an 11-5 advantage. That aforementioned run featured a converted trifecta by Donelson, and four straight points by Mastriano. Later, trailing 14-9, Lyons converted on two straight hoops to pull Medgar Evers to within one, 14-13. The first quarter would come to a close with the Profs owning a slim 15-13 edge.

Rowan University dominated the remainder of the game, starting with the second quarter, where the Profs allowed just one Cougars field goal, outscoring Medgar Evers 15-4 to take a healthy 30-17 advantage into the locker room at halftime.

Early in the third quarter, Djibring connected on two straight hoops to inch the Cougars within single digits (30-21), and moments later, Metra's two converted free throws brought the Cougars to within eight (31-23), but Rowan University would respond by rattling off 28 of the quarter's final 32 points to put the game out of reach. Donaldson and Selmer scored six points apiece in that surge for the Profs, as Rowan led 59-27 after three.

The Profs started the fourth quarter on an 8-0 run, boosting their lead to 40 (67-27) with 7:16 left. Rowan University led by as many as 51 points in the fourth, which it did on two occasions, before winning the game by 49.

Rowan University was far more efficient shooting the basketball, as the Profs connected on 32 of its 65 shot attempts (49.2 percent), while the Cougars converted on just 30 percent of their attempts (15-50). Rowan held a 45-31 edge on the glass, while also dishing 21 assists to the Cougars' five. The Profs doubled the Cougars in steals (20-10), and Rowan also won the turnover battle, committing 20 miscues, while Medgar Evers finished with 38.

January 4, 2026: Pioneers 93, Cougars 33

Djibring paced the Cougars in their loss on Sunday afternoon, as she posted team-highs of 13 points and nine rebounds. Davis added six points and seven rebounds, and Metra contributed six points, five boards, and a pair of assists. Finally, Lyons' three assists led all Medgar Evers players.

Four players scored in double figures for the Pioneers, including Renee Wells, as she registered game-highs of 17 points and eight assists while tying for the game-high of six steals. Additionally, Menna Hafiz contributed 16 points, six boards, and four steals, and Jada Jacobs finalized her afternoon with 13 points, six steals, and three dimes. Kasey Slade posted a double-double with 11 points and 10 rebounds, and Patty Walsh added eight points, five rebounds, two assists, and two steals.

Medgar Evers and William Paterson were deadlocked at six in the opening 3:55 before the Pioneers outscored the Cougars 19-2 for the remainder of the quarter to take a commanding 25-8 advantage after 10 minutes of action. During that aforementioned charge for the William Paterson, Wells led the way with six points, while Jacobs and Walsh netted four apiece.

The Cougars opened the second quarter with five unanswered points, courtesy of a Davis bucket and a three-point play by Djibring, but William Paterson responded with a 19-2 run to take a 44-15 advantage at intermission.

The third quarter opened with Medgar Evers scoring six of the period's first eight points, thanks to four points by Djibring and two by Davis. The Cougars trailed 46-21 at that point, but the Pioneers responded with 12 straight points to bump their lead to 37 (58-21). That 12-0 spurt started with a converted triple by Jacobs, and was capped by a drained trifecta by Wells. William Paterson went up by as many as 41 in the quarter (66-25) before taking a 66-27 advantage into the fourth.

Once the game entered the fourth, the Pioneers outscored the Cougars 27-6 to account for the 60-point margin of victory (93-33).

William Paterson earned a conversion rate of 44.7 percent (38-85), and still won the game by 60 despite missing 13 triples (2-15, 13.3 percent) and converting on just 55.6 percent of its free throw attempts (15-27). Medgar Evers earned a conversion rate of 30.2 percent (13-43), while shooting a perfect 100 percent from the free throw line (7-7). The Cougars held a 43-37 edge on the glass, but the Pioneers held dominant edges in steals (35-5) and assists (27-10). William Paterson committed just 12 turnovers on the day, while forcing a whopping 51 opposition errors.

Medgar Evers will return to action on Wednesday evening, as the Cougars will welcome CUNYAC foe Lehman College to the Cougars Cave. The clash with the Lightning is scheduled for a 5:00pm start.
