After tightly-contested opening quarter, Lightning dominate Cougars over final 30 minutes in CUNYAC action

The Medgar Evers women's basketball team suffered a CUNYAC loss on Wednesday evening, falling to the Lightning of Lehman College by a score of 88-48. The game took place at the Cougars Cave in Brooklyn, NY. With the loss, Medgar Evers slipped to a mark of 2-11 on the 2025-2026 campaign (1-2 CUNYAC). Lehman improved to 7-6 (3-0 CUNYAC) with the triumph.

Despite the loss for the Cougars, Moutiatou Djibring put forth her strongest game of the season, posting a double-double with a team-high 13 points, and a game-high 20 rebounds. She also swiped two steals on the evening. Veteran Jennifer Metra added eight points, nine rebounds, and a team-high five assists, and newcomer Hailey Broderick contributed five points and six rebounds.

In the victory for the Lightning, Nelson Asamoah scored a team-high 18 points while connecting on seven of her 13 attempts from the floor. Her seven assists also led all players, and she snatched four rebounds, as well. Isabela Araujo contributed 17 points, four assists, and three rebounds, and Heaven Figueroa finalized her evening with 15 points, a game-high six steals, six rebounds, and five assists. Finally, Emily Kennedy narrowly missed registering a double-double, as she scored 10 points, collected nine rebounds, swiped four steals, and added two assists.

Trailing 12-5 in the closing seconds of the first quarter, Alexis Davis nailed a long triple, but on Lehman's final possession of the quarter, Araujo raced the ball down the court and knocked down a trifecta to give the Lightning a modest 15-8 advantage after 10 minutes of action.

The visitors carried the momentum of Araujo's buzzer-beater into the second quarter, scoring the first 22 points of the period to extend their run to 25-0, and lead to 29 points (37-8). During that aforementioned 25-0 surge, Araujo and Figueroa contributed six points apiece, with Asamoah adding four. A layup by Metra with 2:57 remaining in the half halted Lehman's run, and the teams scored four points apiece for the remainder of the period as Lehman took a commanding 41-14 edge into the locker room at the break.

An 11-2 spurt to start the third quarter boosted Lehman's lead to 36 (52-16), but the Cougars used a 9-0 run over a span of 2:14 to get back to within 27 (52-25). Lyons scored four points during that surge, a run that was capped by drained triple by Bryanna Merger. The visitors built the lead back up to 36 again, before heading into the final period with a 33-point advantage (67-34).

Metra started the fourth quarter by making a free throw 11 seconds in, but Lehman would rattle off the next 12 points to snatch a 79-35 advantage. The Lightning held a 44-point edge four times in the final session before going on to win the contest by 40.

Lehman College was the far more efficient team shooting the basketball, as the Lightning earned a conversion rate of 45.6 percent (36-79) from the floor. Of those 79 shot attempts, 26 were from downtown, with the visitors sinking 11 of them (42.3 percent). On the flip side, the Cougars were only able to muster a field goal percentage of 24.3 percent (18-74), and Medgar Evers shot 25 percent from beyond-the-arc (4-for-16).
