The Medgar Evers College women's volleyball team suffered a pair of non-conference setbacks on Saturday, falling to the Emmanuel College (Mass.) Saints and the Albertus Magnus College Falcons in New Haven, Connecticut.
The Cougars opened the day against Emmanuel, which entered the contest with a 21-4 overall record and an 11-0 mark in Great Northeast Athletic Conference play. Medgar Evers fell in straight sets, 5-25, 7-25, and 2-25.Â
Medgar Evers struggled to establish its offense against the Saints, recording two kills on 21 attempts while committing five attack errors. Kristin Murray and Kimora St. John accounted for the Cougars' two kills, while St. John also contributed an assist and a dig. Sarah Vallon worked defensively in the back row, while the Cougars continued battling against an Emmanuel squad that recorded 33 service aces.Â
The Cougars returned to the court later in the day against Albertus Magnus, looking to rebound against the Falcons. Medgar Evers performed a bit better than they did in the opener, but still suffered a similar fate, falling by scores of 9-25, 6-25, and 12-25.Â
Medgar Evers showed some improvement offensively in the second match, finishing with five kills on 36 attempts. Moutiatou Djibring led the Cougars with four kills on 11 attempts, posting a .273 hitting percentage. Danajah Lawrence added a service ace, while the team totaled 11 digs.
Albertus Magnus, meanwhile, produced 29 kills and 22 service aces to keep the Cougars under pressure throughout the contest. Phoebe Candy led the Falcons with nine service aces, while Alondra Acosta contributed five kills and five aces in the victory.Â
With the two defeats, Medgar Evers will now turn its attention to the final match of the 2026 campaign, as the Cougars prepare to host the Brooklyn College Bulldogs on Tuesday, Nov. 3, at LaGuardia Community College. The contest will serve as Senior Night, providing an opportunity for the program to recognize five student-athletes for their contributions and dedication throughout their tenures with the team.
Prior to the match, the Medgar Evers Department of Athletics will honor seniors Maritza Argueta, Djibring, Vallon, Bryanna Merger and Raine Williams in a special ceremony commemorating their time with the program.
