Cougars come up just short of second consecutive victory, falling to Hawks in CUNYAC action, 67-66, on Friday evening

The Medgar Evers College men's basketball team dropped a CUNYAC road contest, falling to the Hawks of Hunter College by a score of 67-66. The game took place at the Hunter Sportsplex in New York, NY. With the loss, the Cougars dropped to a mark of 1-23 on the 2025-2026 campaign (1-12 CUNYAC), while the Hawks improved to 6-18 (4-9 CUNYAC).
 
Despite the loss for Medgar Evers, Justin Rosario connected on five trifectas, finishing with a team-high 15 points to go along with four rebounds and a pair of assists. Isaiah Grant drained three triples, finishing with 13 points, and senior Michael Perez contributed 10 points and a pair of steals. Finally, it was Ahmed Toure and Gent Sinananj tying for the team-high of seven rebounds.
 
In the victory for the Hawks, Jayden Jarrett was fantastic for the hosts, posting a double-double with game-highs of 25 points (12-23 FG) and 22 rebounds. John Paul Maaba also registered a double-double, as he netted 13 points while dishing a game-high 10 assists, snatching three rebounds, and swiping a steal. Jeremiah Otasowie (10 points, six rebounds, four assists) and Aiden Glackin (10 points, five rebounds, two assists) also played key roles in the victory for Hunter.
 
Hunter looked poise to run away with the game in the early stages, as the Hawks raced out to an 11-2 lead just 5:56 into the game. Jarrett was fantastic for the hosts during that opening spurt, as he scored six points. The Hunter lead eventually ballooned to 12 (21-9) with 9:08 remaining in the half, before the Cougars started to make a push.
 
Over the course of the next 4:22, Medgar Evers put on a three-point conversion show, with Trevonne Tcha nailing one, Rosario connecting on a pair, and Grant drained one, as the Cougars knotted the CUNYAC clash at 21 apiece with 4:56 remaining in the half. Hunter would go back up by four (27-23), but the Cougars scored five of the final seven points of the session to inch to within one (29-28) after 20 minutes of action.
 
Hunter College scored nine of the first 11 points of the second half to snatch a 38-30 advantage with 17:19 to go. Jarrett was in the middle of it again, as he contributed five of those nine Hawk points. A three-point basket by Nicholas Bocharov, and a bucket by Boubacar Mbaye, brought the Cougars back to within three points (38-35), but Hunter answered with six points by Glackin to increase its advantage to nine, 44-35, with 13:47 remaining in the game.
 
The Hawks led the lead for the next 9:36, until Medgar Evers finally went ahead with 4:11 to go on a converted triple by Grant, as the Cougars went up 62-61. Medgar Evers added another point on a drained free throw by Boubacar with 3:20 left, but Hunter's Maaba converted on a layup to deadlock the contest at 63-all.
 
Later, with 2:41 to go, Bocharov completed a three-point play to give the Cougars a 66-63 advantage. Nine seconds later, Maaba registered a bucket to inch the Hawks to within one (66-65). That score would hold steady until there were 48 seconds remaining. The Hawks' Jeremiah Otasowie would split a pair of free throws to tie the game at 66 apiece, and Otasowie would split another pair with five seconds remaining to give the hosts a slim one-point edge (67-66).
 
Following a Cougars timeout, Medgar Evers ran a play for Perez, but his potential game-winning three point attempt at the buzzer was off the mark, giving the Hawks a thrilling one-point win.
 
The Hawks were more efficient shooting the basketball on the evening, connecting on 28 of 69 shot attempts (40.6 percent), while Medgar Evers earned just a 32.4 percent conversion rate draining 22 of its 68 attempts for the night.

Hunter College held a 47-40 advantage on the glass, and a 4-3 edge in blocked shots. The Cougars dished 20 assists compared to 17 for the hosts, and Medgar Evers also held a modest 6-5 advantage in steals.
 
The Cougars will cap their 2025-2026 season on Tuesday evening, as the team will travel York College Gymnasium in Jamaica, NY to clash with the Cardinals in CUNYAC action. Start-time is scheduled for 7:00pm.
