Women's volleyball defeated in straight sets by Mount Saint Vincent Dolphins in 2026 season opener

The Medgar Evers College Cougars opened their 2026 volleyball season Thursday evening, facing the University of Mount Saint Vincent Dolphins at the Peter Jay Sharp Center in Riverdale, N.Y. The Cougars fell in straight sets, by scores of 7-25, 4-25, 13-25. The result left the Cougars with a 0-1 record, while the Dolphins improved to 2-0 overall.

Dolphins Set Tone Early

Mount Saint Vincent established momentum from the start, taking the first set by an 18-point margin. The Cougars finished the opening frame with one kill, five attack errors and eight total attack attempts, while also recording four team service errors.

The Dolphins' offensive efficiency proved difficult for Medgar Evers to overcome. Mount Saint Vincent recorded 12 kills against just three errors on 17 attempts in the opening set, good for a .529 hitting percentage.

The second set saw the Dolphins extend their advantage, as Mount Saint Vincent earned a 25-4 win. Medgar Evers was held without a kill in the frame and committed eight attack errors on nine attempts. The Cougars continued to compete defensively, however, contributing to a total of 12 digs over the three-set match.

Cougars Show Fight in Third Set

Medgar Evers saved its strongest offensive showing for the third set, recording two kills and scoring 13 points before the Dolphins finished off the match, 25-13.

The Cougars' three kills for the match came from sophomore Moutiatou Djibring, who finished with three kills on five attempts for a .400 hitting percentage. Djibring also recorded a solo block and finished with four total points.

Shanya Aitcheson contributed a service ace for the Cougars, while Sarah Vallon and Raine Williams each recorded two digs. Danajah Lawrence added three digs, and Bryanna Merger recorded three digs in two sets of action.

As a team, Medgar Evers finished the match with three kills, 20 attack errors and 29 total attacks, resulting in a -.586 hitting percentage. The Cougars also registered one ace, four service errors, one solo block and 12 digs.

Mount Saint Vincent utilizes balanced attack offensively

The Dolphins were led offensively by Alysa Padgett, who posted three kills and an impressive eight service aces, finishing with 11 total points. Sophia Madalakis added three kills and three service aces, while Rebecca Talbert recorded four kills on five attempts.

As a team, Mount Saint Vincent finished with 20 kills on 44 attempts and a .227 hitting percentage. The Dolphins also registered 25 service aces, helping them maintain control throughout the match.

Looking ahead

Medgar Evers will now have five days off before returning to action on Wednesday evening, as the Cougars stay on the road to battle Rutgers-Camden in another non-conference clash. Start-time for that contest is scheduled for 7:00pm.
