Cougars lose to Rutgers-Newark in season opener 81-72 in OT

Newark, NJ- The Medgar Evers Cougars opened the 2010-11 Men's Basketball season with a loss, 81-72 OT on Monday night. The Scarlet Raiders improved to 1-0, while the Cougars fell to 0-1. 

The Cougars took an early 6-0 lead, after a pair of jumpers and a layup.They lead for majority of the 1st half, as much as 8pts. The Scarlet- Raiders took the lead with 2:52 left in the half, on a 3pt. shot by Pedro Burgos. They never gave up the lead the rest of the half.

The Cougars in the half, shot 42.9% from the field (12-28 FG-FGA), 60% from 3pt. range (3-5 3pt. FG-FGA), and 71.4% from the free throw line (5-7 FT-FTA). The Scarlet Raiders shot 48.3% from the field (14-29 FG-FGA), 62.5% from the 3pt. range (5-8 3pt. FG-FGA), and 75% from the free throw line (3-4 FT-FTA).

In the 2nd half, the Scarlet Raiders led for about 13 minutes, with a lead as much as 9pts. The Cougars would tie the game at 55, when Jovan Deare made a 3pt. shot. After a couple of buckets for both teams, the Cougars lead for about 6 minutes, when Robert Johnson for MEC made a free throw giving the Cougars a 2pt lead, 70-68 with 25 seconds to go in regulation. The Scarlet Raiders tied the game at 70, when Pedro Burgos made a jumper with 5 seconds left. 

The Cougars in the half shot 41.9% from the field (13-31 FG-FGA), 16.7% from 3pt. range (1-6 3pt. FG-FGA), and 55% from the free throw line (11-20 FT-FTA). The Scarlet Raiders shot 32.4% from the field (11-34 FG-FGA), 50% from 3pt. range (4-8 3pt. FG-FGA), and 47.1% from the free throw line (8-17 FT-FTA).

In the overtime session, the Scarlet Raiders would take the lead 16 seconds in. They lead by as much as 9pts.

The Cougars in the OT only made 2 free throws. The Scarlet Raiders shot 75% from the field (3-4 FG-FGA) and 45.5% from the free throw line (5-11 FT-FTA).

The Cougars in the loss were led by James Gilmore and Winston Douglas each tallied 14pts. Douglas grabbed 10 rebounds, also cumulated three assists, and a steal. Gilmore grabbed seven rebounds, two assists, and a steal. Robert Johnson scored 13pts, Jovan Deare 12pts, and Marlon McGlashin tallied 11pts.

The Scarlet Raiders in the win were led by Pedro Burgos, who tallied 21pts, Chris Diaz 13pts, Jeremiah Rivers and Al'Don Muhammad each with 12pts.

The Cougars will be back in action Friday Novemeber 19 at Roger Williams University in Brostol, Rhode Island. Game time is 7pm.
