LADY COUGARS DROP A PAIR OF MATCHES IN WOMEN'S VOLLEYBALL

Brooklyn, NY- The Lady Cougars Volleyball team played a great match against Sarah Lawrence College as part of their multimatch on Saturday Oct. 1, 2011 at Brooklyn College. The Gryphons beat MEC 3-2 (22-25, 25-21, 25-20, 21-25, 15-8). The Gryphons improved to 2-10, while the Lady Cougars dropped to 0-10.

MEC looked impressive and more important were communicating on the court early in the match. They won the 1st set 25-22 which was the first time this season, they took a set. Sarah Lawrence then fought back and won the next 2 sets. MEC played solid volleyball and won the all important 4th set, to send the match into sudden death. Sarah Lawrence took over and capitalized on MEC's errors in the 5th set, and won 15-8.

MEC in the loss were led by Catheline Joseph. The Sophomore tallied a match high 14 kills (most this season), a service ace, 5 digs, and a solo block. Beatrice Bonhomme tallied 11 kills, adding 2 service aces, 7 digs, and a pair of blocks (solo, and assisted). AnnMarie Bemberry tallied a team high 10 digs to go along with 3 service aces.

Sarah Lawrence in the win, were led by Kathryn O' Sullivan and Xina Graham- Vannais each with 9 kills.

In match 2, MEC lost to home team Brooklyn College 3-0. The Bulldogs and Lady Cougars met for the 3rd time this season (2-0 BC), 2 out of 3 were non conference matches. BC beat MEC 3-0 (25-11, 25-19, 25-15). The Bulldogs improved to 8-7 while the Lady Cougars dropped to 0-11.

The Lady Cougars played much better against their conference rival then in the previous 2 meetings. In the BC had more players and the depth of their team overpowered MEC.

In the loss, MEC was led by Catheline Joseph and Janiece Hill each tallying 4 kills. She also added 4 digs and a blocking assist. Hill added 3 digs. Grace Mercado and AnnMarie Bemberry each added 7 assists and also had identical service aces which were 3.

BC in the win were led by Caitlin McMullen, and Jillian Escobar. Each tallied 9 kills.

The Lady Cougars will be back in action on Tuesday Oct. 4, 2011, when they play borough rival St. Joseph's College (Brooklyn) at Brooklyn Technical High School. Game time is set for 7:30pm.
