Brooklyn, NY- The Cougars roared
on Sunday as
Medgar Evers College beat the
Lehman College Lightning in the 46th CUNYAC/Con Edison Men's Basketball Championships Quarterfinal Round at Medgar Evers College in Brooklyn, NY. The Cougars won 74-52, to improve to 15-11 while the Lightning finish their season at 12-14.
The Cougars led took a quick 2-0 on an athletic layup by
Winston Douglas to the delight of the capacity crowd. Lehman would hit a three-point shot by Samuel Batista making the score 3-2. After the teams trading a pair of baskets, the Cougars took the lead for good on a
Robert Johnson three-pointer, making the score 11-8. Entering the half, the Cougars held a commanding 43-26 lead over the Lightning.
In the first half,
Medgar Evers shot 54.2% from the field (13-24 FG), 55.6% from 3-point range (5-9 3FG), and 85.7% from the
free throw line (12-14 FT). The Lightning shot 29% from the field (9-31 FG), 12.5% from 3-point range (1-8 3FG), and 77.8% from the free throw line (7-9 FT).
The second half was all Medgar Evers College. The Cougars' lead ballooned to as much as 25 points while outscored the Lightning 31-26 in the second stanza. The Cougars shot in the half 40.9% from the field (9-22 FG), 33.3% from 3-point range (5-15 3pt. FG), and 72.7% from the free throw line (8-11 FT). The Lightning in the half shot 22.2% from the field (36 FG), 20% from 3-point range (2-10 3FG), and 61.5% from the free throw line (8-13 FT).
The Cougars finished the game shooting 47.8% from the field, 41.7% from 3-point range, and 80% from the free throw line, while the Lightning shot 25.4% from the field, 16.7% from the 3-point range, and 68.2% from the free throw line.
In the win, the Cougars were led by
Winston Douglas with 17 points (5-7 FG, 1-1 3FG and 6-6 FT), 8 rebounds, an assist, a block, and a steal.
Robert Johnson added 16 points and
Tony Sims contributed with 13 points.
Donnell Lazare grabbed 11 rebounds to go with 9 points.
In the loss, the Lightning were led by Victor Garcia with 16 points, and Chukwuma Ndukwe and Jonathan DeJesus each with 9 points.
Medgar Evers will be back in action on Wednesday February 23rd at 8:00 pm when they play the #6 seeded
Hunter College Hawks in the 46th CUNYAC/Con Edison Men's Basketball Championships Semifinal Round at
City College of New York in Harlem. The first meeting between these two squads, Hunter won 78-67 back on January 19, 2011.
