Box Score New York, NY- The Cougars defeated Baruch College Bearcats 64-62 in Overtime. The game was played at Baruch College in Manhattan on Wednesday January 25, 2012. The win improved the Cougars record to 12-8 Overall and 3-4 CUNYAC while Baruch 9-11 Overall and 3-4 CUNYAC.
Baruch dominated the first half tonight. They led by 10pts at the break. Baruch outshot MEC 37% from the field to 23.3% (MEC). Baruch made their 3pt shots and shot 75% from the free throw line.
The 2nd half was also favored by the Bearcats. They led by as much as 13pts until MEC made a comeback. With 4 minutes to go, Sophomore
Kayode Prime, nailed a huge 3pt shot, cutting the lead to 2pts 54-52 Baruch. Two minutes later,
Winston Douglas made a layup tying the game at 54. This was the first time MEC tied the game. Douglas would make the free throw after converting the 3pt play, making the score 55-54 MEC.
Jovan Deare would nail a free throw giving MEC the 2pt advantage (56-54 with :38 left in regulation). Rob Goldstein would tie the game at 56, when he nailed a jumper with 14 seconds on the game clock. Both teams would get one shot to win the game, but came up short.
In the overtime session, neither team could make a bucket the first 2:13 of the 5 minutes. Baruch struck first, when Calvin Jurewicz- Johnson knocked down a jumper.
Valin Williams would tie the score on a layup with 2:22 left. Both teams would exchange buckets tying the game at 60. Two more exchanges and the game was tied at 62. With 9 seconds left, Rob Goldstein was trying to pass the ball to his teammate, when CUNYAC Rookie of the Week
Brian Johnson stole the ball, and scored on a fastbreak. MEC regained the lead and would hold on to the victory.
After the game, Head Coach
Chris Pursoo was proud of his guys not giving up and playing very hard to get the win. "This was going to be a tough season, with a target on our backs. This game proved that we would never die without a fight. Prime made a clutch shot, which the team responded too. The next four conference games will be a tough way to end the season."
In the win, MEC was led by
Winston Douglas, The Junior recorded his 14th a still tied at #1 in the nation double double. Douglas tallied 16pts, grabbed 18 rebounds, recorded an assist, a block, and a steal.
Brian Johnson scored 16pts, grabbed 15 rebounds, recorded an assist and 2 steals.
Jovan Deare added 15pts.
Baruch was led by Calvin Jurewicz- Johnson who scored 15pts.
MEC will be back in action on Friday January 27, 2012 when they travel to John Jay College in Manhattan. Game time is 7pm.
