Box Score New York, NY- The Cougars defeated the York College Cardinals 80-64 on Tuesday February 21, 2012 at CCNY. This was a CUNYAC/Con Edison Semi Finals matchup. The win improved the Cougars record to 17-10 Overall while the Cougars fell to 9-18 Overall.
York led early 3-0 with a Mark Evans 3pt. shot. After a
Winston Douglas layup cutting the lead to 1, Douglas converted on a foul. MEC would take the lead on a jumper from
Brian Johnson with 18:13 left. They would lead by as much as 17pts in the half. It was a domination for the Cougars.
The 2nd half was all MEC. They led by as much as 16pts. York would cut the lead to 3pts early on in the half, but that was the only time York got close to the lead.
A nice moment came towards the end of the game from York. Senior Omari Phipps recorded his 1,000th and 1,001pts of his career on a pair of free throws.
MEC in the win was led by
Jovan Deare. The Junior scored a game high 24pts(6-11 FG, 2-2 3pt. range, 10-12 FT). Deare grabbed 7 rebounds, tallied 2 assists, and a block.
Brian Johnson scored 21pts, grabbed 5 rebounds, recorded an assist, and 3 steals.
Kayode Prime scored 12pts, grabbed 6 rebounds, tallied 4 assists, and 3 steals.
Winston Douglas scored 7pts and grabbed 19 rebounds. tallied an assist, and a steal.
York was led by William Holley with 18pts and Tony Vails with 10pts.
MEC will be back in action on Saturday February 25, 2012 when they take on College of Staten Island Dolphins at the 2011-12 CUNYAC/ Con Edison Men's Basketball Championships.
