Box Score New York, NY- The Cougars fell to the College of Staten Island Dolphins 82-81 in the CUNYAC/ Con Edison 47th Annual Men's Basketball Championships on Saturday February 25, 2012 at CCNY. CSI's win gave them a berth to the NCAA Tournament. There record is now 24-4 Overall while the Cougars fell to 17-11 Overall. MEC will have to wait for their future matches in the postseason.
MEC started the game off on a high note. They won the tip and scored 4 secs in on a layup from
Jovan Deare. After a
Kayode Prime 3pt. shot made the score 5-0, CSI countered with a TJ Tibbs 3pt shot. Tibbs would tie the score at 5 with 17:45 left in the half. CSI would take the lead on a Tibbs 3 followed by MEC going on a 6-0 run (13-8 MEC with 15:18 left). CSI would go on a 5-3 run to tie the score at 16. After a pair of
Winston Douglas free throws (18-16), CSI would go up by 4pts before MEC came back to tie the game at 24. CSI would build their lead once again to 4pts before MEC tied the game at 31. CSI would build their lead to 11pts finishing the 1st half with a TJ Tibbs nearly half court buzzer beater. CSI lead 46-35.
The 2nd half was all Dolphins. MEC cut the lead to 1 twice but never climbed over them. With a chance to tie or win the game with 3.5 sec left,
Jovan Deare was guarded hard by TJ Tibbs. Deare bobbled the ball briefly and dribbled to his left but lost the ball. It was a tough way to end the season as of now.
In the loss, MEC was led by
Winston Douglas who was named to the All Tournament Team. Douglas recorded his 21st double double of the season with 24pts (6-6 FT) and 15 rebounds. Douglas tallied an assist, 2 blocks, and 2 steals.
Jovan Deare also named to the All Tournament Team scored 22pts (4-6 FT), grabbed 5 rebounds, tallied 3 assists, and 2 steals.
Brian Johnson scored 14pts, grabbed 3 rebounds, recorded 2 assists, a block, and 2 steals.
Kayode Prime scored 12pts (2-2 3pt. range), grabbed 6 rebounds and recorded 2 assists.
CSI was led by Tournament MVP TJ Tibbs with a game high 31pts. All Tournament Teammates Bloochy Magloire with 19pts and Jordan Young also All Tourney member with 13pts.
Chris Beauchamp (Baruch) and William Holley also was named to the All Tourney Team.
