Box Score (Galloway, NJ) – Richard Stockton (20-8) reached the 20-win mark for the 14
th time in school history with an 85-73 win over Medger Evers (17-12) in the opening round of the 2012 ECAC Metro Tournament on Wednesday evening. The Ospreys placed four players in double figures and had 23 assists on their 35 baskets for the game.
The Cougars jumped out to an early lead to start the game, but Stockton righted the ship and fashioned 33-18 advantage on a 22-3 run.
Bill McDonough (Spring Lake/St. Rose) accounted for seven of those points and finished with 10 of his 17 in the half to spark the Ospreys to a 41-24 lead at the break.
Early in the second half, both teams provide the fans with some excitement. Medgar Evers ran off the first 15 straight points to close within two at 41-39 before the Ospreys answered with 17 consecutive counters to regain a commanding lead at 58-41 with just under 12 minutes remaining. Stockton then held a double-digit lead for the rest of the game.
Darnell McCargo (Woodlynne/Collingswood) set a career high with 22 points and nine rebounds to lead Stockton.
McDonough chipped in with 17 points while
Rich Suhr (Toms River/Toms River East) scored 15 including three three-pointers.
DiAndre Brown (Sicklerville/Camden County Tech) added 13 more and six assists to the Osprey total.
Ibn Moye (Toms River/Central Regional) dished out a career-high seven assists.
Standout freshman
Brian Johnson (Brooklyn, NY/Paul Robeson) scored a game-high 24 points for Medgar Evers while teammates
Winston Douglas (Hempstead, NY/Uniondale), CUNYAC Player of the Year and
Jovan Deare (Brooklyn, NY/Thomas Jefferson), CUNYAC Second Team Player, added 17 and 15 points respectively.
The 17pts totaled Douglas with 1,008pts in his 3yr career. He is the 7th person to join the 1,000pt club.
Stockton will host the ECAC Metro semifinals on Saturday at 4 and 6 pm as well as the ECAC championship game on Sunday at 2 pm.
