WOMEN'S VOLLEYBALL FALLS IN SEASON OPENER

Box Score 1 | Box Score 2 Bronxville, NY- The Medgar Evers College Women's Volleyball team played a Hudson Valley Intercollegiate Athletic Conference multi match at Sarah Lawrence College. In Match 1, the host Gryphons defeated the Cougars 3-1 (26-24, 25-23, 21-25, and 25-16). In Match 2, the Steels of Culinary Institute of America defeated the Cougars 3-0 (25-15, 25-9, and 25-10).

In Match 1, the Cougars had a hard fight with Sarah Lawrence. They had multiple chances but ultimately errors cost the Cougars from winning the 1st 2 sets. In Set 3, Medgar Evers College made less mistakes and attacked the ball much better. They would dominate the set and win to for a 4th set. In Set 4, fatigue started to settle in and it was the downfall for the Cougars. Freshman Kalifa Roberts led the Cougars with 10 kills on 21 total attacks. Roberts added 4 service aces, 4 digs, and a solo block. Sophomore Nina Bernadine-White tallied a match high 13 assists. The Gryphons were led by Kitty O'Sullivan with 12 kills. Sarah Lawrence College improved to 1-0 Overall and 1-0 in HVIAC, while the Cougars dropped to 0-1 Overall and 0-1 HVIAC. 

In Match 2, the Steels dominated all 3 sets. Even though MEC tallied 13 kills compared to CIA's 12, the Cougars committed more errors (10) and total attacks (45). Senior Janiece Hill led the Cougars with 7 kills on 18 total attacks. Hill added 3 service aces, and 5 digs. Sophomore Nina Bernadine-White tallied 10 assists. Culinary Institute was led by Emily Brown with 7 kills and Christian Bagby with 16 assists. The Cougars dropped to 0-2 Overall while Culinary improved to 1-0 Overall.

The Cougars will travel to SUNY Maritime up in the Bronx on Tuesday September 10, 2013. Game time is set for 7pm.
