COUGARS WIN A CONFERENCE GAME BY DEFEATING CCNY IN MEN'S BASKETBALL

Box Score Brooklyn, NY- The Medgar Evers College Men's Basketball Cougars defeated the City College of New York Beavers 77-72 earlier tonight. The Cougars improve to 2-16 Overall and 1-9 CUNYAC while the Beavers drop to 5-10 Overall and 3-6 CUNYAC. 

This win marked the end of two losing streaks in conference. This stopped a 10 gm losing streak, dating back to the 2012-13 season, and a five gm losing streak at home. 

The 1st half featured six ties, three each from both squads. Medgar Evers College would have a five point lead, which was the largest in the half. The Beavers on led by three points once in the stanza. The Cougars were hitting their shots, in the 1st half, shooting 42.4% from the field, 30.7 % from 3pt. range, and 100% from the free throw line. They led at the half by just three points. 

In the 2nd half, the Cougars would shoot much better than the previous half: 47.8% from the field. 75% from 3pt. range, and 60% from the free throw line. The Cougars would lead for the majority of the half. Down four points, the Beavers would tie the score at 35, with 17:26. The Cougars would answer with a 11-0 run, spanning a little over three minutes. The Beavers would chip away at the lead, but it wasn't enough for the victory.

In the win, the Cougars were led by Freshman Guard Edgar Benedith with a career high 18pts (6-9 FG-FGA, 3-5 3pt. FG-FGA, and 3-6 FT-FTA). Benedith would grab a rebound, dish out a steal, and add a steal. Junior Guard Khalid Yousef and Sophomore Guard Mark Hudson each scored 17pts. For Yousef, he was 5-8 from the charity strip, grabbed five rebounds, dished out three assists, and added three steals. Hudson was perfect on the free throw line, shooting 7-7. He hit a career high 17pts, grabbed three rebounds, tallied a block, and added two steals. Junior Forward/Center and Co-Captain Valin Williams grabbed a team high 16 rebounds. Sophomore Guard Angel Gonzalez grabbed a career high 11 rebounds.    

In the loss, City College was led by Anthony Lewis with 25pts. Three other Beavers scored in double digits including: Manfred Cadet and Nathan Lopez each with 12pts, and Jordan Ortega with 10pts.

The Cougars will be back in action on Monday January 27, 2014, when the Saint Joseph's College of Brooklyn Bears invade Medgar Evers College. Game time is 7pm.
