Box Score Bronxville, NY- The Medgar Evers College Women's Volleyball team fell to the Sarah Lawrence College Gryphons 3-1 (17-25, 14-25, 25-16, and 18-25) earlier tonight. The Gryphons improve to 1-2 Overall while the Cougars drop to 1-5 Overall.
In the 1st set, the Cougars built a 10-3 lead. The Gryphons entering the match winless, were fighting for a victory. Sarah Lawrence climbed back to tie the score at 11, and finished the set on a 14-6 run. The Cougars tallied three kills on 19 total attacks, while Sarah Lawrence recorded six kills on 16 total attacks.
In the 2nd set, Sarah Lawrence dominated the flow of play. The Cougars led just once at 5 apiece, but it was the Gryphons that won the set. The Cougars tallied five kills on 18 total attacks, while the Gryphons led four kills on 12 total attacks.
In the 3rd set, the Cougars took control of set. They built the lead to 4-3, then 13-7. Sarah Lawrence would fix their mistakes, temporarily and go on 7-0, to regain the lead (14-13). The Cougars would fight back, and finish the set on a 12-2 run. They talled eight kills on 16 total attacks while the Gryphons recorded five kills on 17 total attacks.
In the 4th set, the Cougars started off winning four straight points.Sarah Lawrence won the next six points, taking a 6-5 lead. The score would be tied twice (6-6, and 8-8), Sarah Lawrence would take control and win the set 25-18. The Cougars tallied nine kills on 23 total attacks, while the Gryphons recorded six kills on 17 total attacks.
The Cougars tallied 25 kills for the match, the most this season. They were led by Senior Outside Hitter
Kiwelewa Mlimwengu and Sophomore Outside Hitter
Kalifa Roberts, each with nine kills apiece. Kiwelewa dished out an assist, added five service aces, and seven digs. Kalifa dished out two assists, and added three service aces, and a match high of 11 digs. Sophomore Middle Hitter
Malado Kaba recorded a season high four kills on 12 total attacks. Ms. Kaba added a service ace. Junior Setter
AnnMarie Bemberry dished out a match high 17 assists, and six service aces.
Sarah Lawrence was led by Lenie Siegel with six kills.
The Cougars will be back in action on Saturday Sept. 13, 2014, when they play in the first CUNYAC Multi Match of the season. Medgar Evers College will play Brooklyn College at 3:00pm followed by York College at 5:00pm. Both matches will be held at Lehman College in the Bronx, NY.
