WOMEN'S VOLLEYBALL SUFFERS 1ST LOSS OF THE 2014 SEASON TO SUNY MARITIME

Box Score Throggs Neck, NY- The Medgar Evers College Women's Volleyball team fell to the SUNY Maritime Privateers 3-0 (16-25, 16-25, 15-25) earlier tonight. This was the season opener for the Cougars. They fell to 0-1 Overall while SUNY Maritime improves to 1-2 Overall. 

In the 1st set, the Cougars led three times, through the 1st nine points. The Privateers would go on 15-7 run, to close out the set 25-16. The Cougars tallied six kills on 21 total attacks. 

In the 2nd set, the Cougars started off on a 9-0 run, before the Privateers earned a point. The Cougars were up 13-9, before SUNY Maritime racked up four straight points,  tying the score at 13. The Privateers would finish the set on a 12-3 run, winning the set 25-16. The Cougars tallied seven kills on 24 total attacks. 

In the 3rd set, the Cougars led just once (1-0). They played ketchup the entire set, after that 1st point. As a team, they only tallied four kills on 18 total attacks. 

In the loss, the Cougars were led from Senior Outside Hitter Kiwelewa Mlimwengu with eight kills on 23 total attacks. The Brooklyn, NY native recorded a team high four service aces, and added six digs. Sophomore Outside Hitter Kalifa Roberts tallied four kills on 14 total attacks. Roberts added a team high seven digs. Junior Setter AnnMarie Bemberry tallied a match high 13 assists. Bemberry who hasn't played since 2012, recorded two kills, and five digs. Junior Middle Blocker Michell Cadet added two kills, and Sophomore Middle Hitter Malado Kaba earned a kill.

In the win, SUNY Maritime was led from Shannon Brady with nine kills and Carly Lombardo with seven kills. Christine McCormack dished out a team high nine assists.

The Cougars will be back in action on Thursday Sept. 4, 2014, when they travel to Upper Manhattan, and take on conference foe City College of New Beavers. First serve starts at 7pm.
