WOMEN'S VOLLEYBALL PUSHES FIVE SETS AGAINST SARAH LAWRENCE; ALSO PLAYS JERSEY CITY UNIVERSITY

Box Score 1 | Box Score 2 Jersey City, N.J.- The Medgar Evers College Women's Volleyball team played two matches at New Jersey City University earlier today. In match 1, the Cougars played the Sarah Lawrence College Gryphons. This was the 2nd meeting between the two this season. This match went the distance. The Cougars fell to the Gryphons 3-2 (25-16, 17-25, 25-14, 20-25, 11-15). The Gryphons improve to 2-9 Overall while the Cougars drop to 2-13 Overall. 

In the 1st set, the Cougars led six times. With the Gryphons up 12-11, the Cougars finished the set on a 14-4 run. In the 2nd set, the Cougars were in a hole, and couldn't get a groove. In the 3rd set, the Cougars dominated the set. They led 4-0, before Sarah Lawrence made a small comeback. With the score tied at 10 apiece, the Cougars finished the set on a 15-4 run. In the 4th set, the Cougars never led, but tied the score twice. In the 5th set, the Cougars took a early lead at 5-3, but that was it. Sarah Lawrence finished the set on 12-6 run. This was the longest match for the Cougars this season.

In the loss, the Cougars were led by Sophomore Outside Hitter Kalifa Roberts with a match high and career high 19 kills on 40 total attacks. Ms. Roberts added an assist, two service aces, and a match high 15 digs. Senior Outside Hitter Kiwelewa Mlimwengu tallied 17 kills on 47 total attacks. The Brooklyn, NY native added two assists, three service aces, and 11 digs. Junior Setter AnnMarie Bemberry recorded a career high 33 assists. AnnMarie added 11 digs and a blocking assist. 

In the win, Sarah Lawrence was led by Lenie Siegel with nine kills.

In Match 2, the Cougars fell to the host New Jersey City University Gothic Knights 3-0 (16-25, 13-25, 16-25). The Gothic Knights improve to 2-10 Overall while the Cougars drop to 2-14 Overall.

The Cougars showed some momentum, but NJCU controlled the match. 

In the loss, the Cougars were led by Senior Outside Hitter Kiwelewa Mlimwengu with five kills on 19 total attacks. Kiwelewa added an assist, and seven digs. Sophomore Outside Hitter Kalifa Roberts tallied four kills on 28 total attacks.Roberts added two service aces, and two digs. Junior Setter AnnMarie Bemberry dished out nine assists. 

In the win, the Gothic Knights were led by Shege Haxhaj with 14 kills and Jade Medley with 11 kills.

The Cougars will be back in action on Tuesday September 30, 2014, when they play the College of Old Westbury Panthers. Game time is 7:00 pm.
