Women's Volleyball Loses on the Road to Mount Saint Mary, 3-0

Box Score NEWBURGH, N.Y. – The Medgar Evers women's volleyball team fell to Mount Saint Mary College in straight sets on the road, [13-25, 9-25, 17-25], Wednesday night in Newburgh.
 
Kalifa Roberts (San Fernando, Trinidad/La Romain Secondary) led the Cougars (0-15) with four kills and slammed one service ace in a losing effort. Naomi Chandler (Port of Spain, Trinidad/Bishop Anstey) notched three kills and led the team with six digs and two aces, while AnnMarie Bemberry (Brooklyn, N.Y./Fashion Industries) dished out six assists and added two digs.
 
For the Knights, Kristen Maddock recorded a double double with team-highs in both service aces (10) and assists (22) with four kills in the victory. Jennifer Bones connected on 10 kills, while Elizabeth Lavin chipped in with seven kills.
 
The first set started with a Mount Saint Mary run, scoring eight of the first 10 points. Medgar Evers would fight back into the stanza by taking advantage of the Knights' attack errors to pull within two points. Another outburst led by three Bones kills pushed the deficit back up to 15-8. After moving within 16-12, the Knights would tally nine of the final 10 points to secure the win.
 
After the Cougars grabbed two early points in the second set, Mount Saint Mary would go on a 9-1 run led by five team kills during the outburst to go up 12-3. Nicole Spinelli notched three consecutive service aces leading to a Medgar Evers timeout. The Cougars would use four attack errors late to chip away at the deficit, but it was not enough as the Knights took set two 25-9.
 
The Knights then scored the first six points in the third set, led by three Maddock service aces. Down 10-4, the Cougars put together a 4-1 offensive run, including a Roberts kill and service ace along with Chandler's kill to slice the deficit to 11-8.  Down 12-10, Mount Saint Mary pulled away with 10 straight points led by three Maddock service aces and three straight Lavin kills as they close out the win.
 
Up next for the Cougars, they go on the road take on borough rival St. Joseph's College (Brooklyn) on Saturday, October 10th. Start time is scheduled for 11:00 a.m. Live stats will be made available on SJC's website.
