Box Score THROGGS NECK, N.Y. – The Medgar Evers women's volleyball team was defeated on the road to Maritime (N.Y.) in straight sets, [8-25, 12-25, 14-25], Wednesday night in Throggs Neck.
Kalifa Roberts (San Fernando, Trinidad/La Romain Secondary) slammed three kills and four digs in a losing effort for the Cougars (0-19).
Naomi Chandler led the team with three service aces, while
Nneoma Anyanwu added a kill along with two aces and a block.
Carly Lombardo led the way for the Privateers (12-9), leading the team with eight kills along with seven aces and three digs. Erika Bailey dished out a game-high 16 assists, while Shannon Brady and Meredith Hayes each added five kills.
The Cougars would start the first set with four straight points, taking advantage of attack errors along with a
Shanice Johnson ace. Maritime would even the score at 5-5, and a Anyanwu service put Medgar back up by a point at 6-5. They then would erupt by scoring 12 out of the next 13 points, and 19 of the next 20 as the Privateers cruised to a 25-8 win.
In set two, an early run put the Privateers up by as many as 15-6. Medgar Evers would chip away with kills by Anyanwu and Roberts along with a Chandler service ace to slice the deficit to 17-11.
An 8-1 point run by Maritime would close out the set. It was more of the same in the third as they built up a 14-2 lead. Down to match point at 24-9, the Cougars would fight back with two Chandler aces and a Roberts kill to battle to within 10 points. But a Bailey kills closed out the Privateers' victory.
Up next for Medgar Evers is a home matchup Monday night against Farmingdale State College after nine straight games on the road. First serve is set for 7:00 p.m. at the Cougars Cave.
