Box Score BROOKLYN, N.Y.-- The Medgar Evers men's soccer team grabbed a second-half lead, but could not hold the lead as they battled to a 1-1 draw with CUNYAC opponent York (N.Y.) at Kingsborough Community College Saturday night.
Joshua Fernandez (Queens, N.Y./Far Rockaway) notched the lone goal for the Cougars (2-10-1, 1-4-1 CUNYAC), whileÂ
Lorenzo Pierre-Louis (Delmas, Haiti/Canarsie Education Complex) dished out the assist on the second-half score. GoalkeeperÂ
Ziyaddeen Mohammed (Accra, Ghana/Lower East Side) held the Cardinals (0-12-2, 0-6-1 CUNYAC) to just one goal and made nine saves in the tie.
The first half saw a defensive battle as both teams tried to combat the gusty winds on each pass and shot attempt.
Mohammed in net would shine, stopping York's four shots out of nine total as the teams would play to a scoreless tie in the first. In the second half, the Cougars finally broke through as Fernandez would take a pass from L. Pierre-Louis at 53:45 and scored while being tripped up by Cardinals keeper Masamba Drame.
Despite some great effort to protect the slim lead, an own goal on an attempted clear out at 68:46 tied the game at 1-1. Both squads had their chances in both the final minutes of regulation and into both periods of overtime, but the game ended in a draw.
Up next for the Cougars is a home matchup taking on Hunter College in CUNYAC play. Start time is set for 6:00 p.m. at the Aviator Sports Complex.
