Box Score BROOKLYN, N.Y. – The Medgar Evers women's volleyball team fought valiantly to nearly force a fourth set, but ultimately lost to Farmingdale State College, 3-0 [13-25, 8-25, 18-25], Monday night at the Cougars Cave.
Kalifa Roberts (San Fernando, Trinidad/La Romain Secondary) slammed three kills and a service ace in a losing effort for the Cougars (0-20).
Naomi Chandler led the team with four service aces along with two kills and three digs, while
AnnMarie Bemberry dished off five assists.
For the Rams (11-9), Katie DeGraff led the way with seven kills to go with service aces and two blocks. Barbara Wright topped the team with eight kills, while Megan Pisciotta distributed a game-high 17 assists.
Both teams played back and forth to start the first set. After Roberts put down a kill to cut the deficit to 7-5, Farmingdale State went on a 9-1 run to go up double figures which included three DeGraff aces. After Medgar Evers worked their way back to 20-13 after three straight points, but the Rams would score the final five points to close out the set. In set two, they would continue with an early 7-1 advantage. Trailing 9-4, the Cougars would fall behind by double figures as they lost 25-8.
The third set followed the same pattern, with the Rams going up early at 9-2. Medgar Evers would chip away with a few errors and a Roberts service ace. They would take advantage of more Farmingdale errors and worked their way down four. Following a Ram run that pushed the lead back up to 19-9, the Cougars would show some fight with five consecutive points that included Bemberry kill and two Chandler service aces. They would work their way to within 23-18, but the Rams would close out the win with the two final points.
Up next for Medgar Evers is a matchup on the road against CUNYAC opponent Hunter College. First serve is scheduled for 6:00 p.m. on the Hawks' campus in Manhattan.
