Balanced Attack Helps Men's Basketball Earn CUNYAC Win over York, 76-58

Box Score JAMAICA, N.Y. -- The Medgar Evers men's basketball team continued their winning momentum with a balanced offensive attack as they topped CUNYAC foe York (N.Y.) on the road, 76-58, Tuesday night.

Guard Matthew Lee (Bloomfield, N.J./Westtown) led four players in double figures for the Cougars (2-3, 1-0 CUNYAC) with a game-best 28 points, along with eight rebounds and six assists as the team earned their second straight win. Sophomore Maurice Swaby II (Brooklyn, N.Y./Grand Street Campus) added 16 points and six rebounds, while Steve Shivers II (Brooklyn, N.Y./The Piney Woods School) chipped in with 13 points and grabbed eight boards. Andron Thomas (Brooklyn, N.Y./Thomas Jefferson) was just one rebound shy of another double-double (10 points, 9 rebounds) as he continues his nice start to his freshman year.

York (2-2, 1-2 CUNYAC) got 16 points from Rashaan Bailey, and Ryan Smart secured a double-double (15 points, 11 boards). Anthony Mason added 15 points and seven caroms for the Cardinals in a losing effort.

The first half was evenly matched, with the lead traded back and forth multiple times. The Cardinals were leading 25-19 with 7:59 left in the first, but then the Cougars would take control of the contest with an 18-4 run to close out the half as they headed to halftime up 37-29. York would slice the deficit down to three points in the second half, but Shivers and Lee provided the scoring power to extend the advantage to double figures and would never look back.

The Cougar defense was strong throughout the game, holding York to just 28.2% (22-for-78) from the field. They dominated inside as well, winning the points in the paint battle at 36-24 as well as 19-11 on second chance points.

Following the Thanksgiving holiday, Medgar Evers will return back to the Cougars Cave Sunday evening against Ramapo College. Start time is at 6:00 p.m. and will follow the Dr. Betty Shabazz Tournament hosted by the women's basketball team.
