Box Score BROOKLYN, N.Y. – After building a double-digit lead in the first half, the Medgar Evers men's basketball team let the top team in the CUNYAC rally as the #24-ranked Brooklyn College bounced back in the second half in a 95-71 decision Monday night at the West Quad Center.
Matthew Lee (Bloomfield, N.J./Westtown) was the team leader in scoring for the Cougars (3-6, 1-2 CUNYAC) as they dropped their second straight conference game. The CUNYAC leader in scoring tallied a team-high 25 points and was one rebound shy of a double-double with nine boards along with four assists.
Freshman center
Andron Thomas (Brooklyn, N.Y./Thomas Jefferson) notched his third double-double of the season with 11 points and 11 rebounds.
Maurice Swaby II (Brooklyn, N.Y./Grand Street Campus) added 11 points, while
Zavier Coston (Brooklyn, N.Y./George Westinghouse) dished off a team-best five assists.
Leading the comeback for the unbeaten Bulldogs (9-0, 3-0 CUNYAC) was this week's CUNYAC Player of the Week Egzon Gjonbalaj, who posted a double-double of his own with a game high 29 points along with 12 rebounds and six assists. Jamel Gist also compiled 22 points, while Edon Gjonbalaj contributed a double-double of his own with 14 points and 10 rebounds in their win.
The first half saw the Cougars jump out of the game with a 14-3 run in the first 3:58 of play and had Brooklyn reeling. They would build that lead to as many as 12 points in the half, with 18 points in the stanza from Lee and nine from
Pablo Segura (Flushing, N.Y./Hicksville) all of which from three triples in the game. The Bulldogs would chip away at the advantage with six straight points to send the game to the half with Medgar up 44-40.
Brooklyn would clamp the pressure on the Cougars in the second half, holding them to just 22.3 % from the field while shooting the lights of the ball themselves at a 62.8% clip (22-for-35). The Bulldogs would grab the lead at 48-47 at the 16:30 mark of the second half, and would never trail again. Gjonbalaj totaled 21 points in the second half including a stretch where he scored 15 of the team's 21 points in just six minutes of play.
The Cougars will look to snap their two-game losing streak when they host Bard College in non-conference play on Thursday night at the Cougars Cave in the last game before the Christmas break. Tip time is scheduled for 7:30 p.m.
