Women's Volleyball Loses in Straight Sets On the Road to Old Westbury

Box Score OLD WESTBURY, N.Y. – The Medgar Evers women's volleyball team would fall behind quickly in each set as they dropped a 3-0 decision [25-8, 25-8, 25-13] to The College of Old Westbury at the Clark Athletic Center Thursday night.

For the Cougars (0-4), Kalifa Roberts (San Fernando, Trinidad/La Romain Secondary) tied for the team-high with two kills and added four digs. Tiffany Benjamin (Guyana/Bishop Loughlin) also had two kills and tallied a service ace, while Malado Kaba (Conakry, Guinea/Emmaus) had a team-best four assists. Jkaira Collins (Queens, N.Y./Hillcrest) topped Medgar Evers with five digs in a losing effort.

The Panthers (1-1) got their first win of the season, earning 18-7 edge on kills and a remarkable 17-2 advantage on service aces. Rayn Brown tied a game-high with seven kills, along with five service kills and six digs for Old Westbury. Chelsea Hoffman also slammed seven kills and dished a team-best 11 assists, while Sofia Goris notched five aces and a game-best eight digs.

The first set saw the Panthers erupted from the start, running out a 14-2 lead before the Cougars called a timeout. Medgar Evers would fight back to within 16-6, but would drop the set 25-8 following miscues on their attack.

In the second stanza, Old Westbury followed a similar script by tallying the first 12 points of the set and never looked back. Moving into the final set of the evening,  Medgar would not go quietly as they attempted to force a fourth set. They would put together a small run on kills by Benjamin and Roberts to cut the deficit to 16-10.  The Panthers would grab control, scoring seven of the next nine points as they salted away the victory.

Medgar Evers will return to action Saturday as part of a CUNYAC multi-match when they take on both Brooklyn College and York College at the Nat Holman Gymnasium on the campus of CCNY. The matchup with Brooklyn is scheduled for 11:00 a.m., and the York College matchup is set for 3:00 p.m.
