Women's Volleyball Drop Two Matches in CUNYAC Multi-Match

Box Score 1 | Box Score 2

NEW YORK, N.Y. – The Medgar Evers women's volleyball team was swept by Brooklyn College, 3-0 [25-0, 25-13, 25-6], then fought valiantly and secured their first set victory of the season, and nearly forced a deciding fifth set in a 3-1 [23-25, 25-13, 25-16, 25-23] defeat to York University as part of a CUNYAC multi-match Saturday afternoon at the Nat Holman Gymnasium on the campus of CCNY.

Kalifa Roberts (San Fernando, Trinidad/La Romain Secondary) compiled her first double-double of the season in game two, tallying 12 kills and 13 digs in a losing effort for the Cougars (0-7). Malado Kaba (Conakry, Guinea/Emmaus) had five kills while AnnMarie Bemberry (Brooklyn, N.Y./Fashion Industries) topped the team with seven assists on the day. Naomi Chandler (Port of Spain, Trinidad/Bishop Anstey) added four service aces in game two as well.

In the first match with Brooklyn College, Medgar Evers would drop the first set on a forfeit, but would fight back on in the second set but a late run would give the Bulldogs a 25-13 winner. The Cougars would allow an early run in the final stanza and could not force a fourth set as Brooklyn would sweep the match.

Facing the Cardinals, both teams would trade the lead in the first set. Trailing 23-21, Medgar Evers would roar back with four straight points to take their first set win of the season. York would get out to an early lead, going up 15-4. The Cougars just could not put points up in bunches, and dropped the second set 25-13.

The same problem occurred in the third set and could not build any momentum after gaining the serving advantage. They would cut the lead to 15-10 after five straight points, but failed to take a second set. Down 7-2 in the fourth, the Cougars would rally and get the score even at 9 apiece. The two squads would trade the lead back and forth, and Medgar Evers would actually put the Cardinals on the ropes up 20-17 and neared a decisive fifth set. After a timeout, York would make a run that would ultimately put the Cougars away in four sets.

Medgar Evers will return to action next Tuesday when they host the City College of New York for their first home match at the Cougar's Cave. First serve is scheduled for 7:00 p.m.
