BROOKLYN, N.Y. – The Medgar Evers women's volleyball team worked back into contention in the third set, but fell in straight sets to St. Joseph's (Brooklyn), 3-0 [13-25, 11-25, 17-25] Thursday night at the Cougars Cave.

AnnMarie Bemberry (Brooklyn, N.Y./Fashion Industries) nearly notched her second straight double-double for the Cougars (0-9), tallying 10 digs and a team-high nine assists. Kalifa Roberts (San Fernando, Trinidad/La Romain Secondary) slammed five kills, while Tiffany Benjamin (Guyana/Bishop Loughlin) connected on three kills to go with a team-best three service aces in a losing effort.

Lauren GaNun led the way for the Lady Bears (2-2) with a game-high 11 kills and six digs in the victory. Anna Carbone dished out a game-high 19 assists with four kills and two aces, while Nina DiCioccio added seven kills and a team-best seven digs.

Both teams played close in the early part of the first set, but the Lady Bears would score eleven of the next 12 points which forced a Medgar Evers timeout. GaNun would close out with two kills to give St. Joseph's the set. The second stanza saw St. Joseph's run out to an early advantage, and would take advantage of numerous Cougars attack errors to grab a 25-11 win in set two.

In the third set, the Lady Bears would build a sizable lead at 13-5. Medgar Evers would fight back into the set with five straight points, three of them on Benjamin service aces, which cut the deficit to 13-10 and forced a St. Joseph's timeout which got the Cougar faithful to its feet. However, the Lady Bears would bounce back to extend the lead to as many as eight as they closed out the match win.

Medgar Evers will return to action at the Cougars Cave next Tuesday when they take on The College of Old Westbury. First serve is set for 7:00 p.m.
