Cougars Gameday: Men's Basketball vs. John Jay College

NEW YORK, N.Y. – The Medgar Evers men's basketball team look for their third conference win in four games when they travel to The Doghouse in Manhattan and face John Jay College Wednesday night.

The Cougars (6-9, 3-3 CUNYAC) are seeking to rebound from a 101-81 defeat last Friday against City College of New York. CCNY held the Cougars to just 37.9 % shooting throughout the game, while they shot a blistering 57.4% including an even 60% in the first half. Freshman Justin Sutton (Brooklyn, N.Y.) poured in a team-high 22 points, while Matthew Lee (Bloomfield, N.J.) added 19 points with four rebounds in a losing effort.

Lee leads the conference and ranks second in NCAA Division-III with 29.9 points per game and tied for fourth in D-III with 94 free throws made. Maurice Swaby II (Brooklyn, N.Y.) is third on the team with 11.5 points per game, while Andron Thomas (Brooklyn, N.Y.) grabs a conference-best 9.6 rebounds per game.

Going against Medgar Evers is a Bloodhounds squad (2-12, 1-5 CUNYAC) who are aiming to snap a four-game losing streak, including CUNYAC losses to Hunter and Baruch College who the Cougars defeated on January 3rd and 5th respectively.

Essien Epps is the top scorer for John Jay, averaging 18.3 points per contest which is sixth-best in the CUNYAC and averages 5.1 rebounds a game. Jesse Higgins is second with 11.3 points per game, while Kiernan Hayes leads the team with 7.6 rebounds along with 8.0 points.

This is a matchup between a high-octane Cougars offense, who averages 81.8 points per game (second in the CUNYAC), and John Jay who posted 67.7 points per contest. The Cougars are also the top-ranked team on the glass in the conference (45.4 rpg) against the ninth-best rebounding team in the Bloodhounds (35.3).
