Men's Basketball Falls to CUNYAC Foe Staten Island at Home, 93-74

Box Score BROOKLYN, N.Y. – After jumping out in the first half with a lead, the Medgar Evers men's basketball team could not keep up the offensive pace as they dropped a 93-74 decision to CUNYAC foe the College of Staten Island Friday night at the Cougars Cave.

Matthew Lee (Bloomfield, N.J.) scored a team-best 24 points, including 18 in the second half, to go with five rebounds for the Cougars (7-9, 4-4 CUNYAC) in a losing effort. They also got 17 points from Pablo Segura (Brooklyn, N.Y.), while Zavier Coston (Brooklyn, N.Y.) chipped in with eight points along with six boards and four assists.

Will Fonseca led the Dolphins (12-4, 6-2 CUNYAC) with team-highs in points (22) and rebounds (12) for a double-double in the victory. Frank Schettino poured in 18 points and dished off a team-best seven assists. Thomas Delahanty added 17 points and grabbed seven boards, while Khaleeq Baum scored 14 points and six rebounds in just 19 minutes of play.

In the first half, both teams fought back and forth on the offensive end and had three ties and one lead changes. After the Cougars built up a seven point advantage, Staten Island rallied with a 16-2 run in the final six minutes to take a 49-33 into halftime. They held Lee to just six points on two-of-nine shooting in the stanza.

Medgar Evers would chip away at the deficit and get it to within 10 points halfway through the second, but a relentless CSI offense (56.6% from the field) was too much for the Cougars to handle as they pulled away to victory.

The Dolphins shot a tremendous 53.8% from the field (35-for-65) in the game, and outrebounded Medgar Evers 42 to 31. They also dished out 17 assists and poured in 52 points in the paint for the game.

The Cougars will look to bounce back from the defeat when they face off with Skyline Conference opponent and borough rival St. Joseph's (Brooklyn) Monday afternoon at the Cougars Cave.
