Men's Basketball Loses to CUNYAC Opponent York (N.Y) at Home, 78-71

Box Score BROOKLYN, N.Y. – Despite two players with 20-point efforts, the Medgar Evers men's basketball team could not put enough baskets together as they lost to CUNYAC opponent York (N.Y.), 78-71, Wednesday night at the Cougars Cave.

With the loss, the Cougars (7-11, 4-5 CUNYAC) have lost three straight conference games to fall to sixth in the CUNYAC.

Matthew Lee (Bloomfield, N.J.) paced the team with 22 points, five rebounds and four assists. Sophomore Maurice Swaby II (Brooklyn, N.Y.) also poured in 20 points along with six boards and three assists. Markus Kearney Jr. (Brooklyn, N.Y.) also fell one rebound shy of a double-double with 12 points and nine rebounds, while Zavier Coston (Brooklyn, N.Y.) dished off four assists and grabbed six boards in a losing effort.

Chad Coachman led the Cardinals (6-12, 3-6 CUNYAC) with 23 points and four assists, while Ryan Smart grabbed a team-high 13 rebounds along with eight points and four assists. Both Anthony Mason and Ryan St. John chipped in with 10 points apiece as York earned back-to-back victories.

York controlled the glass in the game, earning a 49-37 edge on rebounds. They also shot 47.2 % from the field, including 48.7% in the second half after Medgar Evers led by two at halftime. The Cougars forced 26 turnovers, and scored 34 points off those mishaps. They also had a great game distributing the ball, dishing off 17 assists. Both teams used the inside game throughout, with each team pouring in 38 points in the paint.

Up next this week for Medgar Evers is a CUNYAC showdown with Lehman College Friday night as part of a doubleheader with the women's team at the Cougars Cave.
