Lee Drops 40 Points as Men's Basketball Turns Back Hunter, 97-89

Box Score BROOKLYN, N.Y. – This week's CUNYAC Player of the Week Matthew Lee (Bloomfield, N.J.) poured in a game-high 40 points, including 25 in the second half, as the Medgar Evers men's basketball team earned their third win in four games with a 97-89 win over conference opponent Hunter College Tuesday night at the Cougars Cave.

Lee tallied his fourth straight game of 30-plus points for the Cougars (6-7, 3-2 CUNYAC) and drained 12-of-14 free throws, and added six rebounds in the victory. His performance increased his points-per-game average to 30.7, which puts him at second place in NCAA Division-III.

Maurice Swaby II (Brooklyn, N.Y.) chipped in with 16 points, while Pablo Segura (Flushing, N.Y.) and Zavier Coston (Brooklyn, N.Y.) also scored in double figures with 14 and 10 points respectively. The Cougars were led on the rebounding end by Aker-Mark Bayley-Hay (Miami, Fla.), who corralled 13 rebounds and swatted three shots.

Brian Kruger netted his 1,000th career point as he tallied a team-high 21 points, including a perfect 12-for-12 at the free throw line, in a losing effort for the Hawks (1-12, 1-4 CUNYAC). Alex Mattina drained 4-for-8 three pointers to total 17 points, while Matt Franks (15 points, 10 rebounds) notched a double-double.

Medgar Evers led the game wire-to-wire, but the game was close throughout despite them shooting 47.9% from the field and holding Hunter to just 31.9% through the game. The Hawks stayed in the game largely thanks to connecting on 35-for-41 from the charity stripe.

In the paint, the Cougars outscored the Hawks in the paint 42-20. Even though Medgar Evers ranks as the top rebounding team in the conference, the ninth-ranked Hunter outrebounded the Cougars 49-38.

Up next for Medgar Evers is a road matchup against the City College of New York Friday night as part of a doubleheader with the women's team. Tip time is scheduled for 7:00 p.m. at the Nat Holman Gymnasium.
