Box Score NEW YORK, N.Y. – The Medgar Evers men's basketball team could not stop the offensive outbursts in each half as they fell to the City College of New York, 101-81, Friday night at the Nat Holman Gymnasium.
The loss snapped a two-game winning streak for the Cougars (6-8, 3-3 CUNYAC), as they dropped their first matchup this week.
Justin Sutton (Brooklyn, N.Y.) paced the team with 22 points, while
Matthew Lee (Bloomfield, N.J.) added 19 points with four rebounds. They also got
Maurice Swaby II (Brooklyn, N.Y.) who chipped in with 16 points, and
Zavier Coston (Brooklyn, N.Y.) grabbed a team-best five boards with 11 points.
Khalil Hamer led the Beavers (9-5, 4-3 CUNYAC), who flirted with a triple-double in the victory. The team's top scorer and distributor totaled 19 points, nine assists and nine rebounds. Robert Dionisio added a double-double, scoring a team-high 24 points and 11 boards, while David Solano (20 points) and Mark Richards (16 points) each scored in double figures.
After a quick 3-2 lead from a Swaby three in the first 30 seconds, Medgar Evers would not lead the rest of the game. An 18-0 Beaver run put them up double figures eight minutes into the contest. The Cougars would not quit, as Sutton drilled four of eight team three-pointers in the half to bring them back to within three. However, CCNY would answer with six threes in the final six minutes of the half to go to take a 54-36 lead into halftime which they would build on in the second half to take the win.
CCNY held the Cougars to just 37.9 % shooting throughout the game, while they shot a blistering 57.4% including an even 60% in the first half. They also earned the edge on the rebounding end with a 43-36 advantage, while also being outplayed on the inside as the Beavers scored 36 points to Medgar Evers' eight.
Up next for the Cougars is their fourth straight CUNYAC matchup next Tuesday, facing John Jay College on the road as part of a doubleheader with the women's team.
