Cougars Gameday Preview: Men's Basketball vs. CCNY

BROOKLYN, N.Y. – The Medgar Evers men's basketball team seeks their third straight conference win and four wins in five games as they take on the City College of New York in CUNYAC play Friday night as part of a doubleheader with the women's team at the Nat Holman Gymnasium.
 
The Cougars (6-7, 3-2 CUNYAC) are coming off two straight victories this week with home wins over both Baruch College and Hunter College.  With the win they are now in a three-way tie for third place in the conference with Staten Island and Baruch.
 
In Tuesday's game, they were led by this week's conference Player of the Week Matthew Lee (Bloomfield, N.J.), who tallied 40 points including 25 in the second half as they led the game wire-to-wire. The senior Lee is averaging 30.7 points per game, which leads the CUNYAC and is one-tenth a percentage point off the top average in all of Division III. He has eight games of 30-plus games, including four straight contests. Andron Thomas (Brooklyn, N.Y.) is tied for second in the conference with 9.6 rebounds per game.
 
Facing the team are the Beavers (8-5, 3-3 CUNYAC), who are coming off a big conference victory over the College of Staten Island on Tuesday night, 81-76. They have a balanced attack on offense, having four players who average double figures. Khalil Hamer tops the team with 14.8 points per game, with David Solano (11.8), Mark Richards (11.6) and Darius Rhodes (11.8) not far behind.
 
Hamer is also the team's top distributor, dishing out 5.7 assists per contest that leads the conference. The junior is very disciplined, ranking second in the league with a 1.3 assist-to-turnover ratio.
 
Medgar Evers is a team that can score in bunches, averaging 81.8 points per game (second in the CUNYAC). They will be going up against the top defense in the CUNYAC in CCNY, who holds opponents to 67.6 points per game. This is also a showdown of the top-two rebounding teams in the conference, with the Cougars taking first (46.2 boards per game) and the Beavers second (42.7 rpg).
