Box Score Men's Basketball Edges York 61-60 in Home Opener, Snapping Five Game Losing Streak
(BROOKLYN, N.Y.) – The Medgar Evers men's basketball team hosted the Cardinals of York College for a conference matchup as well as their home opener at the Cougars' Cave on Tuesday night. Medgar Evers defeated the Cardinals 61-60 snapping their five game losing streak. With the win, Medgar Evers improves to 2-5 (1-1 CUNYAC) while York falls to 0-7 (0-3) on the season.
The Cougars were able to hang on for the victory to get their first conference win of the season. Medgar Evers never trailed and led by as many as 14 early in the second half but kept leaving the door open for York to steal a win. Costly turnovers down the stretch nearly cost them the game but they would get some key defensive stops late to seal the victory. Had the Cougars not gone 6-17 (35%) from the line they might have clinched a victory much earlier. From the field they shot 25-70 (35%) and 5-19 (26%) beyond the arc.
The Cougars had three players in double-figures, with the top scorer being freshman forward
Joevanny Dambreville (Brooklyn, N.Y.). Dambreville had 15 points on 6-15 shooting with three threes including one from the top of the key that he banked in with the shot clock running down late in the second half. Dambreville also grabbed five boards to go along with four assists.
The starting backcourt of junior guard
Maurice Swaby II (Brooklyn, N.Y) and sophomore guard
Justin Sutton (Brooklyn, N.Y) each had 14 points on the night. Sutton grabbed six boards while Swaby II grabbed five and each of them had two steals.
York was led by
Ryan Smart who had 13 points to go along with a game-high 15 rebounds amd four blocks. Men's basketball is back in action Friday, December 9
