Men's Basketball Eliminated in CUNYAC Second Round to Baruch, 91-78

Box Score BROOKLYN, N.Y. – After a 13-win regular season, the Medgar Evers men's basketball team were defeated by Baruch, 91-78, to be eliminated in the CUNYAC Championships second round at the Cougars Cave Saturday night.

Freshman Justin Sutton (Brooklyn, N.Y.) scored a team-high 21 points for the Cougars (13-13, 10-6 CUNYAC) along with five assists and five rebounds in a losing effort. Maurice Swaby II (Brooklyn, N.Y.) tallied 17 points, including five three-pointers, along with four assists and four boards while Zavier Coston (Brooklyn, N.Y.) chipped in with 10 points.

CUNYAC scoring leader and first team All-CUNYAC guard Matthew Lee (Bloomfield, N.J.) played through both first-half foul trouble and constant double teaming to score just eight points on 3-of-10 shooting.

Doyin Isaac led four players in double figures for the Bearcats (15-12, 10-7 CUNYAC) with 20 points in the win. Chiamaechi Ekekeugbor poured in 19 points with six rebounds, while Raymond De La Cruz hit six-of-seven shooting (four-for-four from three-point range) to total 18 points.

The first half saw both teams fire on all cylinders from long range, with Baruch hitting seven threes to the Cougars' six. Swaby hit four of his five total triples in the stanza as the Bearcats took a 38-33 lead into intermission. In the second, Baruch would break out a double-digit lead in the first five minutes of the half thanks to shooting at a 56.0% clip in the second. They would close out the game in the second by hitting 21-of-25 free throws in the half to seal the victory for the Bearcats.

Medgar Evers would score 41 bench points despite the loss, but could not score any second-chance points throughout the game.

This closed out a positive season for the Cougars, with a 13-13 record on the 2015-16 campaign. They won 10 more games this season than the previous season to place fourth in the conference and finished the regular season on a six-game winning streak before tonight's loss.
