Lee, Swaby II Pace Men's Basketball to Third-Straight Win over John Jay, 82-80

Box Score BROOKLYN, N.Y. – Matthew Lee (Bloomfield, N.J.) continued his offensive dominance with a game-high 39 points, while sophomore Maurice Swaby II (Brooklyn, N.Y.) scored 20 points including the go-ahead three-pointer with 5.3 seconds remaining as the Medgar Evers men's basketball team edged out John Jay, 82-80, Friday night at the Cougars Cave.

With the win, the Cougars (10-12, 7-6 CUNYAC) have now won their season-best third consecutive victory and take sole possession of fifth place in the conference.

Lee compiled his 11th game of 30 points or more with his 39-point effort. The senior hit 13-of-23 from the field and 12 out of 12 free throws, while also dishing a team-high six assists. Swaby scored 20 points, including five of the team's seven three-pointers along with six boards and four assists. Andron Thomas (Brooklyn, N.Y.) also chipped in with 11 points with eight rebounds and two blocks.

Kiernan Hayes led three Bloodhounds (3-20, 2-12 CUNYAC) in double figures with 20 points, while both Jesse Higgins and Essien Epps scored 18 points apiece. Higgins added five boards and five assists in a losing effort.

A wild game saw nine ties and 14 lead changes throughout the game between the two teams. After a Swaby three-pointer sent the Cougars up 42-38 at halftime, John Jay made a furious run in the second half to move ahead by as many as nine points with 9:51 left in the second half. Medgar Evers would cut the deficit down to two but still could not break through.

Last week's CUNYAC Player of the Week Lee would counter each Bloodhound bucket and would tie the game at 78-78 with 1:06 left in regulation. Following a missed layup by John Jay, Lee would hold the ball for one shot with 31 seconds remaining. On a drive to the basket, he would find Swaby open on the wing, who drilled the go-ahead triple with 5.3 seconds left to put Medgar up 81-78.

After two Higgins free throws cut the lead to one, Swaby hit one of two freebies the other way. A last second shot fell short from John Jay as the Cougars secured the win.

Medgar Evers goes for their fourth-straight win with a road matchup against CUNYAC foe the College of Staten Island Tuesday night as part of a doubleheader with the women's team.
