Matthew Lee (Bloomfield, N.J.) poured in a game-high 35 points as the Medgar Evers men's basketball team earned their fourth-straight win in a wild 83-82 CUNYAC victory over Staten Island Tuesday night at the Staten Island Sports and Recreation Center.
With the victory, the Cougars (11-12, 8-6 CUNYAC) extend their season-best win streak to four, and moves to within one game of fourth place Baruch College in the conference. The Dolphins (17-6, 10-4 CUNYAC) fall out of first place and into a tie for second with Brooklyn College.
The CUNYAC's leading scorer Lee has now scored 30-plus points in 12 games this season, and also dished out a team-high six assists and seven rebounds. Freshman
Andron Thomas (Brooklyn, N.Y) posted a double-double with 14 points and 17 boards, and swatted three shots.
Zavier Coston (Brooklyn, N.Y.) chipped in with 10 points in the win.
Frank Schettino tallied a team-best 25 points for Staten Island with five assists and seven rebounds in a losing effort. Senior Will Fonseca posted a double-double with 23 points and 13 boards, while Thomas Delahanty (11 points, nine rebounds) fell one board shy of a double-double of his own.
Medgar Evers started out the first half hot, building up a nine-point advantage less than seven minutes into the game. The Dolphins wouldn't falter, and came right back with seven of the last nine points of the half to take a 45-40 lead into halftime.
In the second, both teams traded the lead multiple times as the game saw in total nine ties and seven lead changes. The Cougars played tough defense in the stanza, holding CSI to just 32.5% from the field. On the other side of the ball, they became more efficient on offense with an even 50% field-goal percentage.
They sealed the game at the charity stripe by hitting 13 out of 16 free throws in the half, including four in the final minute from
Maurice Swaby II (Brooklyn, N.Y.), as Medgar Evers held on for the win.
The Cougars will seek their fifth-straight win in a home matchup against second-place Brooklyn College in the "Battle for Bedford Avenue" Blackout Game Friday night as part of a doubleheader with the women's team.
