Box Score Men's Basketball Can't Hold Late Lead in Regulation, Fall 96-87 to Rival Brooklyn in 2OT
(BROOKLYN, N.Y.) – The Medgar Evers men's basketball team hosted the Bulldogs of Brooklyn College in the "Battle for Bedford Ave" at the Cougars' Cave in a CUNYAC matchup on Wednesday night. Brooklyn would pull away in the second overtime winning by a final score of 96-87. With the loss, Medgar Evers falls to 3-14 (2-8 CUNYAC) while Brooklyn improves to 4-16 (2-9) on the year.
Medgar Evers played a solid first 15 minutes. The five minutes after that they went 1-5 with five turnovers as Brooklyn was able to cut a 10 point deficit down to three going into the half. Freshman forward
Russell Mitchell (Brooklyn, N.Y.) led the way for the Cougars in the first half with 11 points and nine rebounds.
Maurice Swaby II (Brooklyn, N.Y.) also had double figures with 10 while the team shot the ball well going 17-35 (49%).
The second half both teams were evenly matched. Medgar Evers had a five point lead with just under two minutes remaining in regulation until Brooklyn scored a layup with 47 seconds left and then tied the game with a three from the left wing to send it into overtime. Brooklyn jumped out to a quick six point in the first two minutes but sophomore guard
Joancarlo Bonilla (Woodside, N.Y.) answered with a three of his own. The final bucket of the first overtime period came with one minute to go when freshman guard
Jovon George (Brooklyn, N.Y.) knocked down a three in the corner. The Cougars scored the first bucket of the second overtime but that would be the final bucket. Brooklyn went on an 11-0 run over the final three minutes winning by nine.
Maurice Swaby II led the Cougars with 20 points and dishing out nine assists while playing a game-high 48 minutes.
Russell Mitchell had his first career doublr-double with 18 points and a game-high 15 rebounds. Brooklyn was led by
