Box Score Men's Basketball Loses 78-65 on the Road at Valley Forge, Sutton Leads the Way with 17
(PHOENIXVILLE, PA.) – The Medgar Evers men's basketball visited the Patriots of Valley Forge in a non-conference matchup on Super Bowl Sunday. The Cougars had trouble hanging on the ball as they turned the ball over 25 times on their way to a 78-65 loss. With the loss, Medgar Evers falls to 4-16 while Valley Forge improves to 12-6 on the year.
The Cougars had a rough first half until the final five minutes when they made a few baskets to cut the lead to five. The Patriots controlled the majority of the first half turning the ball over just five times and shooting 41% from the field. On the other side Medgar Evers turned the ball over 15 times in the first half leading to 20 points off turnovers for Valley Forge. The Cougars were able to stay in the game thanks in part to some good shooting. As a team they went 11-21 (52%) in the first half.
Medgar Evers did not start the second half well as they allowed the Patriots to open the half on a 14-0 run while also turning the ball over five times. The Cougars could not cut the deficit to under 10 points until there were five mintues. The lead was too much to overcome as Valley Forge would hang on to win the game.
Medgar Evers was led by sophomore guard
Justin Sutton (Brooklyn, N.Y.) who had a team-high 17. Freshmen teammates
Jovon George (Brooklyn, N.Y.) and
Russell Mitchell (Brooklyn, N.Y.) both scored in double figures off the bench. George had 15 on 7-12 shooting while Mitchell added 10 points and eight rebounds.
Valley Forge was led by
Devin Williams and
Austin Lobo who both scored a 19 points on the game. Men's basketball is back in action Tuesday, February 7
th when they visit conference rival Lehman in a CUNYAC matchup beginning at 7 p.m.
