Women's volleyball downed by USMMA King's Point at Liebertz Gymnasium Friday evening

Box Score The Medgar Evers women's volleyball team suffered a non-conference defeat on Friday evening, falling to the Mariners of the United States Merchant Marine Academy in three sets, by scores of 12-25, 7-25, and 9-25. The match took place at the Liebertz Gymnasium in King's Point, NY. With the loss, the Cougars slipped to a mark of 1-9 on the 2024 campaign, while USMMA improved to 7-4.

Despite the defeat for the Cougars, veteran Jennifer Metra and newcomer Maritza Argueta tied for the team-high of five digs. Britonya Lloyd also added four digs and a kill, and Adacia Scotland chipped in with two digs, as well.

Elizbaeth Kay and Sophia Murray tied for the match-high of eight kills. Jenny Dyke contributed six kills, and Maddier Mayer put forth a tremendous all-around performance, contributing four kills, a match-high seven service aces, and four digs. Alexa Tipps' 15 assists and six digs were both match-bests. Kylie Creech finished with 13 assists, three service aces, and three digs, and Sierra Richardson piled six service aces.

In the opening set, USMMA held a 6-4 advantage before putting together a 12-2 run to take a commanding 18-5 edge. USMMA's Virginia Robert and Murray contributed three kills apiece during that run. Later, with Medgar Evers behind 23-8, the Cougars rattled off four consecutive points, courtesy of an Aliyah Chapman service ace and three hitting errors by the hosts. The Mariners then closed out the set with back-to-back points via a Sydney Douglas kill, and an attack error by Argueta. USMMA took set one, 25-12.

The Mariners opened up the second set by scoring 10 of the first 11 points to snatch a commanding 10-1 edge. During that spurt, Kay registered a pair of kills, with Douglas chipping in with a kill of her own. Merchant Marine maintained a 10-point lead throughout the set, eventually slamming the door on it with a ferocious 8-1 run to win it, 25-7.

Trailing 3-0 in the third set, Medgar Evers scored three of the ensuing four points to pull to within one, 4-3. King's point later led 7-4 before scoring seven consecutive points to snatch a 14-4 lead. During that stretch of seven straight points, Douglas registered three service aces, and Murray earned a pair of kills. The hosts closed out the set on an 11-5 spurt, winning it 25-9, and earning a sweep of the non-conference clash.

For the evening, USMMA swatted .277 (33-15-65) compared to Medgar Evers' -.211 (1-9-38).

The Cougars will return to action on Thursday evening, hosting the Lightning of Lehman College in a CUNYAC match at the Cougars Cave. Start-time is scheduled for 6:00pm.
